Just went through this myself.
I ended up with a Pi 4 4gb.
I decided on it because I already have most things like fans NVME boards, power supplies and cases for the Pi4’s.
The Pi 5s take different hats and power supplies and even cases… Which added substantial cost to the Pi5’s.

I have used FEH in the past. I used it as a dedicated picture display on a Raspberry Pi, but had issues with it being stable. I may give FEH a try again…

Those of us working on these projects definitely need to check the screen frequently to ensure there’s no backlight bleed or dead pixel ruining the mirror effect. Instead of having to install a specialized module just to get a black background, I switched to using a simple black screen tool
https://blackscreen.space that runs right in the browser. It’s incredibly convenient and light on my Pi—just open it up, and you instantly get a perfect solid black screen, ideal for quickly checking display quality or putting the mirror into a temporar no y “stealth mode” without deep diving into the module configuration. If anyone needs a quick debug or screen test, be sure to bookmark this!

I’ve been working on a custom MagicMirror setup and wanted to share a fun addition I’m experimenting with: integrating stepper motors to add motion-based interactivity.
Using a stepper motor driver (like the A4988 or DRV8825) connected to a Raspberry Pi via GPIO, I’ve managed to make parts of the frame move — for example, a sliding panel that reveals a hidden display or rotates a camera for facial recognition.
I’m controlling the motor using Python (with RPi.GPIO and time libraries), and syncing it with MagicMirror modules via custom notifications. It’s still basic, but the idea is to eventually have the mirror respond to voice or presence detection by physically moving components.
Has anyone else tried mechanical elements like motors with their MagicMirror builds? Would love to hear your ideas or suggestions!

I DID have to put an always on repeater in between due to the walls and distance, but this is part of the zigbee design of the mesh… had to do that in my garage too as the metal door causes enough loss of signal to make the GDO control flakey without it… but plugged in another zigbee outlet(not used for any switching), poof all good

Standard MDF is usually the best balance for MagicMirror frames and back panels if it’s staying indoors: stable, easy to machine, and very paint-friendly once sealed and primed. MR MDF only really makes sense if there’s humidity involved, and while ply is stronger, getting that smooth painted finish takes more prep.
Appreciate you sharing your experience, really helpful.

I had build up two identical mirrors - one for me and later on a second one (a clone) for a fried of mine.
My own is on a Pi5/8GB which was always hot and the power supply was hot as well - which led to some major modifications in my mirror setup because I had to move the power supply out of the frame - which was not that easy, annoying and unsatisfying…
The ONLY fact that IS useful and is an argument for the Pi5 is the really smooth integration of a NVME SSD disk which I had performed and am happy with. The fan on the pi5 is HUGE ! (NOT the „official Pi 5 fan“ tiny thingi which isn’t sufficient). Picture of fan
The second mirror (clon) is software-wise nearly identical but is installed on a (spare) Pi4 which layed around so it was no problem to overhand it to my friend. This is performance/capacity wise identical and MUCH colder. The SD-card reliability problem on this Pi4 is solved with an USB-SSD-Stick.
Today I might go for the Pi4 again…
Good luck!

If you’re thinking of building your own smart mirror setup, you can actually make it look a lot cleaner and more “custom” by framing it with cut-to-size MDF panels or lightweight boards. That gives you a sleek finish and lets you easily mount LED strips or smart controllers behind the frame.
For example, at MDF Direct, you can get MDF boards cut to your exact measurements — ideal for mirror frames, wall panels, or even bathroom cabinetry. If you want a moisture-resistant option, their moisture-resistant MDF is a solid choice for bathroom environments.
Pairing that with a two-way mirror (as @sdetweil mentioned) and a smart LED controller gives you the perfect mix of tech and design.
Hope that helps, and good luck with your smart mirror build!

I guess to get both - easyness and cheapness is not possible…
As far as I have seen pictures around and read several comments here in this forum I got the impression that best result will be with glass - this is kind of expensive.
The cheaper version with Acrylic is not that “brilliant” and there are may some restrictions in the viewing angle.
The least expensive so cheapest version is the foil - this is the far most complicated one because you have to apply the foil on some kind of Acrylic or glass which often fails due to bubbles, scratches, dust or whatever.
I definitely wanted to go for glass.
In the meantime I have decided to build up a “Magic Signage” not a mirror.
This is caused by the fact that the already build up prototype is present since several weeks in our living room and we visit this beauty several times a day.
So the final version will stay nearby - at least in the living room and a mirror at this place doesn’t make any sense to us.
(initially planned was to replace the mirror in the hallway but this becomes obsolete for the above reasons)
HTH,
Regards,
Ralf
