You presume incorrectly. That is an example. You need to go to openweathermap.org and sign up for your own API key. Get your locationID there at the same time. Enter those into your config

To test things out and to get things working you mentioned I needed an api key. So I went to the section information in the module set up a copy and past there example presuming that would be a working one.

If I had to guess, I’d say that your use of nano to edit your config.js file is at fault. There is an easier way to edit your config.js file that doesn’t require the use of nano, or even the terminal, at all. Straight out of this tutorial:

Go to your Pi desktop

Click the File Manager folder. (Top menu bar, 3rd from the left, in Raspbian Jessie)

Double click the MagicMirror folder.

Double click the config folder.

Double click the config.js file. (Not the sample! The config.js file you made during setup)

Your config.js file is now open in a text editor. (leafpad)

Edit your file and remember to SAVE
