intermittent "white screen" problem

I’ve been setting up my MagicMirror and I have an odd problem. Seemingly randomly/intermittently the screen will go bright in a checkerboard type pattern. I tried to take a pic with my cellphone -
A few feet away it looks like a solid white screen.
pm2 log MagicMirror only showed a few “Can’t parse feed item:” but no errors logged. I can ssh into the pi and pm2 restart MagicMirror, and it comes back.
Any clues? How can I fix this?

I just found some references to cranking up gpu_mem, just set it to 192 crossing fingers.
