I want to take a laptop monitor in its chassis and make it a monitor/keyboard for my desktop so I can use it easily from my couch. Unfortunately, I know nothing about LCD controller board.

I don’t know if this asking people to do too much research or anything like that, but I don’t know how to tell which parts I should buy. I don’t currently have a laptop panel in mind, as I am intending to buy it with its associated chassis. My goal is to make something that looks like a laptop, but is actually a peripheral to a desktop that connects to it with a USB C cable that has a monitor, keyboard, and some other peripherals. I have a few requirements for the monitor:

    • 15 or 17 inch, at least 1080p (preferably 1440p, at least 120 Hz.
    • I want it to be able to be powered with the power a USB C cable can provide.
    • Ideally, I would want a panel that goes to a laptop with a fairly thick chassis to I can work in it for my other peripherals

I hope this is something someone can help me with. I don’t really know if this is on topic for this forum, but this seems to be the largest place where LCD boards are discussed. If this is the wrong place and anyone can direct me to a better forum, that would be great.

@zarquan I think a tablet that runs a vnc app connecting to your desktop would be a lot simpler

or an actual laptop, running vnc back to desktop
or if laptop and desktop running windows then
rdf (remote desktop facility) to desktop

@sdetweil I’m not sure I trust networking to manage the basic functionality of my computer. Playing games online or surfing the web is fine, but if my computer has a performance problem (e.g. running out of RAM because I forgot to close my browser and have hundreds of tabs open, which happens sometimes when I am researching something), then I could lose control over my computer because it doesn’t have the resources to run the vnc.

I am aiming for a solution that doesn’t involve networking.

@zarquan So a while back I got an LCD Controller Board in Hope of saving a screen from my old iMac. It turned out that I ordered the wrong one, and just didn’t return it. Fast-Forward a couple months when I realized that I have an old laptop that wasn’t worth upgrading. So today, I took the laptop apart and salvaged as much as possible including the screen. I hooked it up to my LCD Board and it partially works. There are lines at the Right side and it shows the top of the screen again at the bottom. I flipped the LVDS Cable and it just appeared as a white screen. Please Help!
