Is it practical to remove the paint from the paint back of an IKEA mirror rather than purchasing special glass? What would I use to remove the paint?

Unfortunately, that is not going to work for you unless you then apply “2-way” mirror film or reflective coating. The operative word is “2-way”. Standard mirrors won’t work. Frankly, you’d have one hell of a time and still not be satisfied. If cost is an issue then please consider “2-way” acrylic mirror which is far less expensive than 2-way glass. Of course, glass is the best result but acrylic can be acceptable. You get what you pay for.

Do a search right here on the forum for “which mirror to use” and you’ll find plenty of discussions about it.
