Recycling older Samsung flat screen for magic mirror
-
I have an older Samsung tv that I would like to use for my magic mirror. Couple questions. I’m a bit concerned about heat. After removing the housing, I noticed the bands connecting the screen get very hot. I was thinking of mounting some usb powered fans within the frame to cool down the pi and to offset the heat from the tv. I’ve never done this and want to make sure it’s done safely and correctly.
The other issue with the older Samsung is that it seems too old for cec commands. Maybe I’m wrong. Has anyone has any experience with this?
Many thanks for your time.

yeh, unlikely… none of my TVs support CEC, and all show the ugly no input screen if the hdmi port is turned off… not fun…

yeah. before building a frame and ordering the glass, it might make sense to buy a monitor instead that does support cec commands. any suggestions?

@nneuland no idea on that point
only a recent tv supports CEC, but NOT from all the devices connected to it, who are all running MM…
pi4 yes, pi3 no, jetson nano no, odroid nomy desktop is dvi -> hdmi, so no (the monitors are lg 29in from 2016, so no… )

Yep. I think I may just look for a second hand or cheaper computer monitor.
I just want to make sure the PIR sensor is compatible with it… -
@nneuland cheaper = older… so be careful. anything before 2010-2012 looks like its impossible to have.
the wiring was mandatory, but the firmware was optional.
my 2016 LG monitors do not have it. -
If you just care about turning the TV on and off you could use a relay that triggers the power button of the TV. @cruunnerr made a guide for PIR and relay setup.
