Where to buy (from the Netherlands) and how to choose a mirror and screen?
-
Hi Guys,
Like many here I’d like to create a magic mirror. I’ve ordered a Raspberry Pi, the software is no problem. It’s my daily job. But the hardware…
How to choose the right mirror and screen? I’ve read a lot here on the forum but still, I’ve no idea where to start. I want to create a mirror from 175 cm height and 50 cm width. Should I buy the glass first or the screen? The screen should be at the top but how to find a screen of exactly 50 cm width after removing the edges? And should I choose a TV of computer monitor? Any difference?
- What type of glass should I buy? I don’t want to see the screen edge.
- Where should I buy it? I’m from the Netherlands
- TV or computer monitor?
All tips are welcome! Thanks in advance.

Hi,
IMO, the TV monitor is more expensive than a computer monitor.
For your project, you need to find your screen before you decide on the dimensions. And for the width, do not forget the width of your wood. If the mirror have to be 50cm width, then you have to choose a screen from 39" to 42" max. The panel (your nude screen) will be less than 50cm with one of those dimensions.
I don’t know the price in your country for the one-way mirror, but it’s expensive too… In France, my choice is too use an acrylic glass and then put a one-way film on it. :-D
Your project looks more or less like mine:

Hello Roy,
I bought acrylic ‘glass’ at pyrasied.nl in Friesland. They cut to the millimeter.
The monitor I used is a DELL P2317H 23" Full HD IPS Zwart computer bought at Acesdirect.nl
Good monitor with a very good view angle.Good luck

@charley thank you for you reply! I’ve ordered a sample there but I’m going for a real glass one as suggested here: https://twitter.com/royduin/status/1011198336051924993
Why did you buy IPS instead of TN or VA?

@rayduin
I had no particular reason to buy IPS, but the viewing angle is best.
There is an interesting article to read tn-ips-va on hardware info in Dutch
I have used the same screen at some of my customers so it was my first try.
