Considering taking donations to support the MagicMirror project. Interested in your thoughts!

Mich: This is absolutely not an unreasonable request. Given the amount of effort and time you have put into this project and the benefit to me, I would certainly donate. I’m surprised you have not added a donation button yet. I just assumed you were independently wealthy!

Perhaps take a look at the model Sam Harris uses for his podcast. It’s very similar to what you’re proposing here. It seems to work for him and it’s a much more honest and better approach for Internet based projects going forward (as opposed to ad-based systems).

You should make the forum have ads if the person is not logged in. That should generate some income.
Also a voluntary donation is easy to setup and I really enjoyed the project so far and would be willing to give a donation as I think most would.
Another option would be have paid plugins. For example I have been bashing my head trying to get the analytics plugin to work. I would be willing to pay for it.
Good luck and I hope everything works out for you.

@savona
Donations a for keep going forum, not for resolving issues with modules. -
MM has been the most fun and at the same time useful project I’ve ever been involved with. I will definitely donate! And I wouldn’t have learned node.js and extended my Linux knowledge if it wasn’t for MM, which is worth a lot. Great work @MichMich!
I think single donations is the way to go (or at least the option for single donations). I think people are more hesitant to sign up for monthly/yearly donations.

@MichMich We’re currently working on a project featuring MagicMirror and would be very interested in supporting. Would you mind sending us private message so we can reach out? Would love to share more details.

Willing to donate for this awesome project and work done by MichMich. Prefer PayPal for donations.

@michmich I would donate for sure. Surprised that there is not an option already.

+1
and could you give us some advice how much you need, for example : if 10% of the forum user gives 10€ each year it’s covers the forum server expenses, or if 10% of MM users gives 5€ each month you could work full time on it, …

I would definitely support one-time donations via PayPal and a monthly tiered Patreon. As someone mentioned before I like the idea of a Patreon tier that would be able to vote on what modules and features are added next. Personally I would support a monthly Patreon.
I would also not be opposed to a marketplace where developers could make money from their modules and support the modules that they create. Similar to what WordPress has done with plugins and themes.
