  • RE: Introduce yourself!

    Hi all,

I’ve been posting here for the last few days so I thought I’d finally introduce myself!

My name is Ad, i’m 27 and work primarily in the youth work and development sector. I enjoy tinkering as a hobby but would not consider myself an expert by any means, more of a Jack of all trades, master of none.

I’ve built 2 mirrors so far, the first was a very hacky job using a throw away monitor from a youth center I used to work at and some spare parts I had from previous RPi projects, it uses an RPi 2 and runs Smart-mirror which has hotword detection etc.

I then started building my second mirror which uses MagicMirror2 and so far I have found the experience spot on. It’s been very reliable and easy to use and I love the fact that the modules gives everybody control to make their own mods, Smart-Mirror relies primarily on it’s creator to issue the updates which can be cumbersome when trying to customise the mirror for each user.

Don’t be afraid to say Hi! I’ve posted a picture below of my second mirror, when it’s complete I will post the rundown in the show off your mirror section.

In that case, the LED shouldn’t interfere at all, the mirror will only be affected by the light reflecting off it not behind it.

  • White flash when electron boots up

    Hi guys,

I have wondered for a while now whether there was anything that I can do to remove the white flash when electron starts up, has anyone had any success in doing so? there are a few tutorials online but I’m only just getting my head around JS/Python.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Many Thanks

If I’m understanding correctly, you intend on hanging a mirror next to or between a couple of windows? if there is no light facing the mirror and therefore reflecting I would go for the standard mirroview. Mirroview 50/50 is good when there is a lot of ambient light reflecting in the mirror i.e. if you have windows on the left or right walls in relation to the mirror. Does that make sense?

No problem, I went through different types of acrylic and glass samples before I settled on the mirroview. Here is a photo I took today of the standard Mirroview pane, I’ll try and do a comparison shot of the 50/50 as well.

I’m not going to lie, the text can be a bit difficult to make out when there is lots of ambient light but this mirror is being used in a bedroom with 1 window so it’s not really an issue, if you were setting one up in a space with a few windows then I would definitely go for the 50/50.

    www.mirrorsandglass.co.uk

They do 2 variations of Pilkingtons Mirrowview glass, I have built 2 mirrors and thus have tried both the standard mirroview and the 50/50, Mirroview is great for rooms with little ambient light and has a better overall “mirror” quality to the glass, the 50/50 works well in very ambient spaces but the mirror has a bit of a green tint to it similar to the effect of getting glasses with an anti-glare protective coating. Highly recommend Mirrors and Glass, excellent customer service.
