Like you I have tried many mp3 (iPod, iPod video, scan disk, sansa etc) BUT I always go back to the ipod for the simplicity. Other mp3’s don’t cater to large volumes of video & music like ipod do not do they allow you the freedom of arranging your music library. Other players only allow play tracks by file size or alphabetical order and i don’t like that. If you need decent storage you perhaps need to go back to the iPod as they have 30gb, 80gb and even a whopping 160gb range. I also hear the zune is quite good but I opted for iPod video because I had the same issues as you. Bottom line, there a lots of nice mp3 players out there but iPod is certainly streets ahead if you need big storage. Hope this helps

You could always build a Plex Media Server and then run the webapp for Plex on the Pi your Mirror is running. I think you can even control it through a smartphone (not 100% sure on that though). It is free and the server is super simple to install (I have it installed on my Mac Mini, but there are ways you can install it on a Pi). If you are going the Pi route though, I would recommend doing it on a Pi that is only for that purpose, since it will be doing a lot of work.
