  • Borderless mirror and wooden frame

    Hello!
I’m building my first magic mirror using an oval mirror (Mirastar SGG) and a back panel in 5mm MDF wood laser cut to this shape to house a 27" display:
    Screenshot 2025-04-28 at 14.24.51.png
    the outside dimension is 160cm x 50cm.

Now I am a bit unsure about some next steps regarding how to connect the mirror with the panel:

    1. the panel is wood light brown at the moment, does it make sense to paint it black (given that the display will be black when off) or is it not worth it?
    2. I prefer to avoid mechanical solutions, due to the weight of the mirror and the fact that the anchors won’t be directly connected to the wall, but just to the wood panel, so I’d go with glue or adesive strips. Considering the previous point, which silicone or adesive to use: transparent or black. Which one would you recommend to not damage the mirror and at the same time not been seen from the front?

Regarding the color of glue I’m reading opposite opinions: the mirror provided told me that there shouldn’t be issues with the transparent one, but I have the feeling they don’t have too much experience with 2-way mirrors.
BUT here in the forum I’ve read that black one is better if you have a black background.
BUT most silicone I’ve seen they are not suitable to be used on painted wood.

Sooo you see I’m not really sure how to proceed

  • RE: MIRASTAR 6mm Mirror : a good choice ?

@acdacd2 Hi! I just found a quote for this product from a local supplier. I was wondering if you (or anyone else here) had experience with it.

  • RE: Monitor recommendation

@BKeyport Thank you very much for the info!
I’ll experiment with HDMI sleep to avoid cutting the power off entirely, or blank when not in use but for that I’m a bit worried about power consumption…

If anyone else has any specific monitor recommendation (or some simple way to get panels too would be an alternative!) I’m all hears

  • Monitor recommendation

    Hello everyone!
I’ve already searched in the forum for existing threads but didn’t find anyone that is up to date or covering what I’m looking for.
I’m about to build my first mirror and the display is going to be in the center of the mirror, not covering the whole mirror, so I’m a bit worried about light bleeding and seeing the rectangle of the display even in the black parts of the UI when the room is in low light.
I’m planning to use Pilkington MirroView.

The characteristics I’m looking for a display are:

    • between 22" and 27"
    • high contrast ratio / low back lighting
    • no turn on/off animations or logo displayed (want to turn it on/off when no people are in front of the mirror)
    • can be rotated vertically

Looking forward for some recommendation, thanks all!
