    • RE: 230V in the naked monitor

      Thanks for your ideas!
      @Jopyth mine looks quite a lot like yours. I took some photos and will post them on the weekend, but I won’t have any time this week.
      I also had the idea to check with the multimeter, but I didn’t know what exactly to connect to.
      I know that theoretically the metal shouldn’t carry a high voltage and be grounded anyway, but I still fear that something bad might happen, especially when the already-old monitor ages even further (I know, nobody can guarantee anything, but still it’s good to discuss the matter)
      Heat is another problem I didn’t think of at all yet, I’ll check that as well when I have time.

    • 230V in the naked monitor

      Hi :)
      I got an old flatscreen monitor that fits quite well into a magic mirror. The only problem is, it has an integrated power supply. That means the 230V AC (Germany) go right into the monitor that I have to free from its case, leaving bare metal. Which makes me feel extremely uneasy touching it or leaving it hanging from the wall (I know it shouldn’t be a problem, but still I really don’t like the idea).
      Any electricians / experts among you, what do you think? Is it safe to use a monitor with internal 230V power supply without the case?

      @dbahn25 Referring to your review I ordered a mirror at glas-per-klick.de immediately. My mirror has the size 60x40cm and I will build the complete smartmirror in the next weeks!
      So thank you very very much for your review, I’m really happy with that result! :)

      Happy to hear that! I’ll order a big one as well, but first I’ll make use of the one I got.
      Would you post a few pictures of the packaging when you get it? I really wonder how they ship such a big piece of glass, even my small one came in a huge box buried under tons of paper and bubblewrap…

      My test mirror finally arrived today, and I immediately took some photos with it on my screen for you guys ;) I didn’t have much time though, so it’s just a very quick test

      0_1479143364912_resize-1.jpg

      I think it looks great, and even though the mirror is VERY reflective (3% transmission) the things displayed on screen are still clearly visible (and I only tested with the normal Windows 10 desktop with a rather dark grey background, but not with a raspi + magic mirror software yet)

      @DirkS this one gets quite close to the “shiny bathroom mirror”, which you said the myspiegel.de one is not

      I’ll post more pictures when I get on with my build (I’ll build something with that piece of mirror, even though it’s that small…), but that’ll probably not be before next week

    • RE: Can I use any LVDS board with any LCD screen?

      @Novocain That looks to be a great summary
      The one I got was an universal one, but it was just five bucks, so never mind… I simply didn’t research much before I bought it

      Here is a picture of my connector:
      LVDS connector

      you really have to watch out for the connectors! I’ve got a panel called LTN156AT05 and ordered some generic controller board from banggood. It came with the connector @astronauti showed, but that did not fit! I still haven’t got one that fits or even a new controller board since I don’t really need it that much, but you really need to watch out about what connector there is on your board and on your panel

    • RE: Where to get (cheap) acrylic mirror from in Germany

      @Novocain iirc I ordered the normal “silver” spy mirror version. It might have a too low transmission rate (3%, reflectance 60%), but we will (hopefully) see tomorrow

      @DirkS alright, thanks :)

      @dbahn25 The UK Side you mentioned doesnt ship to Germany do they ?
      They don’t say anything specific about that, and it’s possible to choose other countries than the UK in the checkout form. I didn’t go any further, yet, though.

      My 20x30cm test mirror from glas-per-klick.de should arrive on monday, I’ll post some pictures of it when I get it.

      @DirkS is it normal that everything looks kind of blueish / greenish in your room because of the light, or is that the mirror?

      I found something else: http://www.glas-per-klick.de/spiegel-antikspiegel/spionspiegel.html
      since the small one (20x30cm) is pretty cheap I’ll just order one and try it out. I’ll keep you posted.

      @thk That looks great!!

      Kindly apologize, seems like the link was not really working:
      http://www.pilkington.com/de-de/de/produkte/produktkategorien/spezialglaeser/pilkington-mirroview

      That’s probably the best possible option, since it’s advertised to be used with TVs and screens. Have you already asked them how much that mirror costs?

      EDIT: I just found a youtube video displaying the 50/50 version for high ambient light… that looks really good imho!
