Just been looking at making up a smart mirror and intend on using a Raspberry Pi with a laptop LCD screen.

I intend on using the following parts:

Window Film Paper Insulation Stickers One Way Mirror:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01HLRXZCO/

GENUINE LG 17.1" LCD CCFL LAPTOP SCREEN DISPLAY GLOSSY LP171WP4 (TL)(R4)
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/172589039356

HDMI+DVI+VGA LCD LED Screen Controller board Converter Kit for LP171WP4(TL)(N1)
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/162382181142

    12V 1A AC/DC Adapter Charger Power Supply
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201472545453

I will then use some wood (possibly an old photo frame) to size up the mirror and tidy up with 3D printed components / duck tape.

Has anyone else done this the same / a similar way, and if so what difficulties did you encounter?

I haven’t tried so myself, but I did encounter a few things about doing that (if u recall correctly). You could try using a search engine for finding info about people building their own screen

I did it. Is not my “Main Magic Mirror”, I just made it for fun. I have no mirror, only the simple screen.
I have used an IKEA RIBBA triple picture frame, this has fit of the width and needs to be shortened only in length.

maybe an another tip is to use a strong power supply with 12V 4A and a converter modul from 12v to 5V than use have only one cable
