Alright, so this may seem beyond simple, but I have to ask…

I’ve run through the install on a Pi2. The install gave me no problems. I go through the final reboot and…I’m looking at the Raspbian GUI.

Can anyone suggest the (clearly extremely obvious) step that I must have missed?

You mean, you miss the autostart feature?
Did you follow the instructions mentioned in the read.me?

      Configuration: https://github.com/MichMich/MagicMirror/wiki/Configuring-the-Raspberry-Pi
      Autostart: https://github.com/MichMich/MagicMirror/wiki/Auto-Starting-MagicMirror

No, I was actually using this setup guide here, which is less complete, but sure shows up in searches more often: https://github.com/MichMich/MagicMirror/wiki/Jessie-Lite-Installation-Guide

Now, however, I’ve gone through the setup you linked and and have ended up with:

        Check current Node installation …
Node currently installed. Checking version number.
        Minimum Node version: v5.1.0
        Installed Node version: v6.4.0
        No Node.js upgrade nessecery.
It seems like MagicMirror is already installed.
To prevent overwriting, the installer will be aborted.
Please rename the ~/MagicMirror folder and try again.

If you want to upgrade your installation run git pull from the ~/MagicMirror directory.

        pi@pi:~ $ cd ~/MagicMirror
        pi@pi:~/MagicMirror $ git pull
        Already up-to-date.
        pi@pi:~/MagicMirror $ cd $HOME/MagicMirror
        pi@pi:~/MagicMirror $
        pi@pi:~/MagicMirror $ npm start

        magicmirror@2.0.0 start /home/pi/MagicMirror
        electron js/electron.js

          @Merijeek

Actually, reran yet again and (possibly) looking better.

Once my card reader stops acting oddly I’ll probably do a reinstall and start again from scratch. Maybe figure out where I went wrong.
