24" Frame Mirror
-
Hey All,
First a big thanks to everyone. Wonderful forum with tons of help.
I’m building a mirror for my best friend for her birthday. I need to keep it simple so I dont have to provide much support. LOL. I dont have real pictures to show yet, but below is a mock up of what it will hopefully look like.

Hardware:
Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ with 16GB
LG IPS LED Monitor (24MP48) with bezel removed
Two Way Mirrors 1/4" Smart Mirror with polished edges
NECO-X 24" IR Frame
Mini USB Microphone (probably wont work once in frame)
PS3 Eye
Dual fan for RPi (maybe)
Chrome switches
Pimoroni On-Off Shim
White braided extension cordFrame:
4 layers of 3/4" birch plywood. Front will have a walnut stain. The sides will be painted white.Modules:
Clock
Calendar
Compliments
Current Weather
Weather Forecast
MMM-Cursor
MMM-MyCommute
MMM-newsfeedtouch
MMM-voiceMMM-Kalliope
MMM-Wunderlist-Enhanced
MMM-SystemStats (will probably remove, but good during dev)Misc:
Remot3.it I have this set up for ssh and rdp. Works greatCron job to reboot RPi every night at midnight.
Two buttons on the side will be used to turn the RPi off completely using the Pimoroni On-Off shim and to power the monitor off completely. I’m using MMM-voice to put the monitor in stand-by.
Enabled the Open GL driver fix. I had some issues with MMM-voice after doing this. The usb mic and display would alternate device IDs after every reboot. The fix is noted here: https://forum.magicmirror.builders/topic/7232/mmm-voice-mic-number-changes
I’m currently working on a custom version of MMM-voice that will show responses on the screen. i.e. After detection of keyword a modal will pop up to display hello message and some tips on what commands can be used. My first idea was to use MMM-TTS for the response, but I couldnt get it to work. There was some questions on the forums about if and how well the IR frame would work when paired with a mirror. I can report that it works great.Edit: I’ve decided to not use the IR Frame. The fingerprints on the mirror were annoying. Now that I have Kalliope working well, there’s no need for the IR Frame.I’m hoping to get the frame done this weekend. I’ll post pics of the process next week.

That looks beautiful. May I ask what mirror size you ordered from Goldjunge? Thinking about making this my parental leave summer project…
-
@buzztiger I measured the IR frame and ordered the same size mirror from https://www.twowaymirrors.com/smart-mirror/. The size is 13.625" x 22.438" x 1/4"
-
@sharmstr they have nice mirrors (wanted to buy one until I saw the shipping costs lol)
-
@maxbachmann I’m guessing you’re not in the states then :) I paid $19 for shipping. The mirror itself is expensive, but they are really really nice.
-
@sharmstr do you know the wavelength of your IR Frame? ^^
Yes Germany makes it over 100$ I like them because they are pretty much the only you could use with touch foils under the glass -
-
@sharmstr No checked that then will contact them ;) in my build the frame would be bigger than the hole in the mid of my frame. So this gap does not fill with dust I would like to fill it but obviously should not filter the infrared ^^ Thought about pmma casting resin because that would fill it nicely and filters until around 400nm and then again above 2800nm. So I guess it should work :face_with_tears_of_joy:

It looks like it’s going to be amazing. I just joined here and I keep coming back to your setup. I would really, really love to see a build process once you get it done. The IR frame interests me the most if it works reliably.
-
@sharmstr I see everyone using IR Frames. What makes them better than putting a touchfoil on the mirror? does that screw anything?
-
@maxbachmann I didnt even think about the dust. Hmmmm.
@Bakuretsu Thank you. I’ll post pics of the process. I started messing around with MM last year. At the time the voice stuff ran really slowly so that’s why I wanted the IR frame. Now with the new RPi 3 model B+ that was just released, the voice integration is fairly quick. Having fingerprints on the mirror gets to be annoying so I may remove it all together or at least make sure none of the touch related functions are in the middle of the mirror. Stay tuned :)

I cant answer that. Its just the route I went. Maybe the foil gives the mirror a bit of a fun house effect? I have no idea really.
-
@sharmstr yes I thought that aswell especially because everyone uses the Frame

Touchfoil doesn’t work beneath the mirrorglass due to the metallic coating.
Even the mirror supplier that was linked earlier says it has to be an overlay (i.e if you use a foil it should be on another layered glass over the mirror itself)
Touchfoils are basically a sheet of transparent plastic with many really really thin wires running across the surface. Gives you around 98-99% transparency.
