The monitor stand is definitely unique. Good looking build.

RE: Clean installation... fails left and right
@devinhedge said in Clean installation... fails left and right:
Config info:
RasPi 3b+
8GB SD card
Running on Rasbian Stretch Lite
Attempting to run using sample config.js
No other installed modules at this point
Attempting to run as either server/client or server onlyWell, I think I’ve detected your problem. From the GitHub page for the Magic Mirror project:
Note that you will need to install the latest full version of Raspbian, don’t use the Lite version.
So. My advice is to pull your SD card and flash the full desktop version of Raspbian Stretch. I don’t think you need the “recommended software” version, but you do need the desktop.
Edited to add: It seems others have similar problems with the latest version of Raspian. Apparently they changed something in the base images. Anyhow, follow this advice and you should be able to get back on track.

RE: Just installed magic mirror, now how do I change some things?
@Crookedsoul The modules that come with the Magic Mirror software can be found in
~/MagicMirror/modules/default/[name of module]
(assuming you ran through the tutorial and didn’t change anything).Any of the modules that you download from the community (Weatherbug, Instagram, Tides, etc.) need to be installed in their own folder in the modules folder. The positioning of any module is handled by the config.js script located at
~/MagicMirror/config/config.js
. In addition to location information, you’ll also define most of the module’s configuration there as well. Think of it as configuration parameters that you’re passing into the module code, so you need to specify those parameters while you’re telling the Magic Mirror system to load up the module. -
RE: Mirror for a Charity Auction
@Tippon Yeah, that’s pretty much it. The mirror attempts to connect to my command & control server at DNS entry that I control. When it connects, it establishes a reverse SSH connection. I can ride that reverse SSH connection down into the mirror. The C&C server is cloud based, so I just turn it off whenever I don’t need to connect to the mirrors.
Because it’s the mirror making the outgoing connection, firewalls let it pass by. All the mirror needs is a connection to the internet.
I have a pretty long tutorial on how to set it up. I’m a bit verbose.

RE: Autostart & turning off powersave
@deadherring said in Autostart & turning off powersave:
What finally worked is this:
In the terminal window type: “sudo apt-get install xscreensaver” .It will install a screen saver that you can then access from the menu. Go in and disable the blank screen.
This is the only thing that worked for me and my screen has been on for an hour now.
@deadherring Heh. I tried that. But then the screensaver activated and I got a lovely fiber optic flower on top of my my mirror interface. I’ll look into it again.
Edited to add: Whoops. Never mind. I wasn’t looking in the right place. I tried setting “Blank After X minutes” and it wouldn’t let me set it to zero.

RE: Mirror for a Charity Auction
@sdetweil Now this sounds interesting. Do you have tutorial or URL where I can learn how to set this up?

@kpenrose47 I don’t know if that’s a copy & paste, but you’re missing a

It should be

RE: Wanna buy Raspberry pi 3 toolkit.
Hey @Neha-Afreen. The Raspberry Pi itself doesn’t require much in order to run. You can buy one at Amazon pretty easily. You’ll need:
- Raspberry Pi 3
- USB cable for power
- HDMI cable for video
- MicroSD card with the operating system
You can get most of that together in a Complete Raspberry Pi Starter Kit
That should get you started with the Raspberry Pi portion of the project. Let us know when you’re ready for the carpentry part!

RE: Trouble getting it to start
That is weird! If you are able to launch the mirror software with
DISPLAY=:0 npm start
PM2 should definitely work :(Don’t forget, you told him to re-flash his SD card. That would have wiped the PM2 installation.
@PhilsterM9 You’re almost there. Your original mistake was that you told PM2 to run the
mm.sh
script twice (and then 3 times). Let’s make sure that you have PM2 installed, now that you’ve reflashed your SD card.Run this:
pm2 status
. If you get the table, great. Let us know how many entries are in it. If you get theNo command 'pm2' found, did you mean:
line, go back to the tutorial and follow the steps again, starting withsudo npm install -g pm2
.If you do have more than one line in the table when you check PM2 status, you’ll want to remove all of the extraneous ones.
pm2 delete 1
and possiblypm2 delete 2
if there are three entries. Get it to where there is only one entry in the list when you runpm2 status
. Then save the pm2 state:pm2 save
.Okay, once you have saved the pm2 configuration, pm2 will make sure that your mirror is running. You don’t need to tell it start ever again. Hopefully. You should be able to reboot your Pi and then run
pm2 status
and see that themm
process is running all by itself.
