I would say… why do you want to?

I will admit as a web developer and then rolling out thin clients my head was that everything should be server/client.

There is the option to run MM as a server and it is useful for some applications - mainly where the “thin client” aspect is desirable, a.k.a. you need greater control on the thin client.

However, rPi is so lightweight that if you are talking about multiple monitors that are physically accessible then it makes sense to just run the entire MM install on each rPi. When I start expanding mine I will probably image them with all conceivable modules and keep the config.js served centrally. But that is only really habit of years wanting something to be central. In the end it wouldn’t be a huge issue to remotely update what I needed.

Thank you, this module has made my 4yo daughter - who is a fan of fish - very happy. If the OP plans to update it it would be good to make the black background on images transparent for those of us using photos as bg.

Oh, also, forget facial recognition for the moment. FR works if you have a small number of faces, or a large number of faces and a sodding huge computer to do the maths. If you can make FR with hair salon customers on a rPi… dude, pick up the phone to the FBi/MI5, they have a huge salary for you :winking_face:

My personal view - without wishing to dent your enthusiasm - is that a MagicMirror module probably isn’t the way to go.

When you are starting out writing a module/add on for software you always have to ask “what is this software intended for”? With MM it is to display jnformation. You can get some interactivity, but as @tuxx1112 it isn’t really setup that way. Add to that you are combining it with an API to Google, so an added layer of complication beyond just storing the images locally.

You also need to ask what you want the software to do for your business. Do you just want the images, or do you want the promotion as well? If so, do you not want the images to be on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram rather than Google.

Personally, my first choice would be to separate out taking the photo, and the display. 99.9% of your customers will have a smart phone and already take a photo of their new hair cut themselves. So, you could ask them to tweet them to you or similar and scrape the details from there onto MagicMirror, where you could categorise them by Twitter handle.

If you are wedded to the idea of having this as an “all in one” type thing I would use an Android tablet and run MM in server mode. Display the MM on the tablet but set it up so if you press a button it takes the photo, then pops up for a name and you can use the touch screen keyboard to type it in. Android tablets are already plugged into Google and it eliminates the need for a physical keyboard which IMO are never desirable for a MM installation. That way you are separating out the display - MM - and the photo taking/uploading - Android.

I think what you want is possible as a MM module just as it is possible to wash your dishes in your washing machine. It’s just that it’s much better to use two machines that are designed for the purpose than one trying to do two jobs.

I’m not sure quite what you are trying to do. Perhaps you could explain it in a more step-by-step way? E.g. are you taking photos from a camera on the MM, or you’re uploading photos from your phone?

If the latter the most sensible way of doing it would be to just dig into MMM-GooglePhotos - there is a lot of functionality from the API there that isn’t used and you could expand on.

The time lapse I don’t really understand but then I don’t wear makeup. I don’t want to see me getting more knackered over time :) but there you are.

WIth facial recognition I think the question would be… how many people in each household will be using this feature? I would imagine in many it would be one. So whether it would be worth going to the considerable bother of setting up even basic AI to do facial recognition… I don’t know. But then, as I said, I’m not the target for this module.

Oh, also, if you want a “glass” type button you can use box-shadow. I’m never sure which I prefer and tend to swap periodically.

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has every looked at using the MagicMirror software for dementia patients?

I work in a hospital with dementia patients every day. Many in advanced stages basically sit there like vegetables, bored out of their minds, distressed and unable to communicate.

We do have machines to deliver reminiscence therapy - similar to this - but the machines are £7500 each so we only have six across three hospitals.

We also have dementia clocks - because dementia patients tend to lose track of times and days - which are about £70 but obviously they are aesthetically ugly as hell.

I have increasingly been thinking MagicMirror could be a much better solution. Firstly, the clock face could be much more aesthetically pleasing. Plus you could build in extra features.

1. Allow phone and video calls from relatives.
2. Allow friends and family to send photos either of themselves or ones for reminiscence, e.g, school and wedding photos.
3. (Potentially) use the camera to monitor them and check they’re okay. This may sound creepy but remember the alternative for many is to send in carers to check up on them. And I can say from experience many people find the idea that they need to be checked up on very oppressive. But, obviously there’s a balance.

Probably the best solution would be to host it and then access it using Android tablets as clients for simplicity’s sake because you don’t really want to need any interaction, it needs to be “set and forget” as much as possible.

I would be really interested to hear people’s thoughts on this. My initial thoughts were to write an Android app or have it hosted on a website. But an app is less than ideal because everything is stored locally if something goes wrong. And a website doesn’t really feel like the right solution because they are designed to be interactive, and of course this is the exact opposite - it needs to be designed to be viewed easily, not interacted with.

The ultimate aim would be that currently if we have a patient who gets on well with the £7,500 machines when they are discharged you have to say “sorry mate, tough luck, we need that back”. If you could load it onto a tablet, well, everyone has a spare tablet or can pick one up for less than £100. So it could be something they could take home with them.

Any thoughts, positive or negative, very welcome.
