I tested a few phones now and it seems to be a browser issue.
I downloaded Chrome to a old phone that wouldn’t display MM using it’s default browser. this Now displays MM. :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes:
Unfortunately my old tablet will not down load this. I suspect it is to old to handle it. Sadly I had built a mirror for this tablet so looks like I need to find an app till I create something to show MM content on this tablet.

RE: Can You connect to MM server via laptop?
@mykle1 said in Can You connect to MM server via laptop?:
address: “0.0.0.0”
address: “0.0.0.0” was the key ,thanks, I can now view from My laptop. However this doesn’t work for my old tablet
It maybe something to do with its browser as I only get a black screen.
Tablet is running Android 2.3.1 so it may be too old. -
Can You connect to MM server via laptop?
I have my Raspberry Pi running MM in server mode and I can access this from my pi browser however I can’t connect from another device.
I plan to create a few mirrors with old tablets and or Old phones.
the problem I’m having is I can’t connect with anything other then my pi.
I’ve edited the config.js file so the whitelist is set to all IPs []
I even tried setting to my laptops current IP (192.168.1.6)
Am I missing something or is this not possible? -
RE: Getting solar ducks in a row
@sdetweil Thanks for the added info. I’ll add that to my list of things to install.

RE: Getting solar ducks in a row
@sdetweil thanks for replying Originaly I was thinking of controlling my Home automation setup Via voice but I don’t believe a extra module will be required for this other then for displaying status of devices .
My concern was what if anything I needed to install to have the PS eye work with the PI. I discovered the drivers for it are already included in Debian. So it looks like I’ll only need the GitHub motion project for your module.
I think I’ll wish to remotely view the PS eye at some point as well. -
RE: Writing my own OS
Although I did state I thought creating your own OS was a waste of time. It may have been a bad choice of words. Lots of people state “why reinvent the wheel?” well if that were the case we’d all be using wooden wheels on our autos. The statement of “creating my Own OS” makes me think this won’t be shared with a sharing community.
If everyone created their own MM modules and didn’t share where would MM be?
I also don’t wish to discourage anyone from learning and creating something new and my OP definitely came across like that. That was not my intention. -
RE: Removing reflective film/coating?
Usually with window film install directions there is a warning not to use Windex o clean as the ammonia eats at the film.
you can try that however you may get unexpected results (spotting or streaking) -
RE: Getting solar ducks in a row
My Acrylic two way mirror arrived and I’ve started to tear down an old 12" led monitor, so I definitely can get two mirrors out of this one piece of mirror.
I also found a PS Eye camera which I’ve read different user incorporating into their mirrors. However I’ve not found a specific post as to how someone actually got this working.
If there is a how to I’ve yet to find it.
Perhaps someone can help me out on that front? -
RE: Segmentation Fault
As I’ve yet to install Magic mirror I’m not sure if there is a backup option.
(still in the research stage)
If there is this would make importing Magic mirror setups to another device. Simply install MM on the new device and then restore a backup. -
RE: Writing my own OS
I also believe you should not waste your time creating your own OS.
If you wish to do this purely for learning this can be done by taking a current OS and just strip it down to what you need. You’ll also get more enjoyment creating something others can use as well. So stick with Magic Mirror and expand on it you’ll learn just as much and others can benefit, while you learn you can also be teaching. -
RE: Segmentation Fault
The drivers in the 3B+ OS are not compatible with older PIs
Thus the SD card or image from the 3B+ will not work in the Zero W -
RE: Introduce yourself!
I’ve been reading through the forum getting ready to create something for my Off grid solar place in Ontario Canada.
I built the place (Logs) with help from my uncle. Logs were all put into place by hand and since it was a bit of a distance from hydro I decided to install Solar which I did my self.
I’ve been into HomeAutomation since the 80’s using Windows and some Software I created in VB.net.
I first became aware of Magic mirrors in 1989 but originally though of them as simple things to amuse kids.
That was most likely due to the video. I’ve never been big on Linux but every year I’d load up the newest version to see how it was developing. This spring I jumped on the PI band wagon as the Zero W for $5 was just to tempting to pass up.
I embedded it into an existing X10 PC interface module and been using the Pi to control my Home Automation both here off grid and my city place since.
I retired about a year ago so I spend most of my time here at the log home (at least the months with no snow)
I was previously using a HP Thinclient as my Home automation control center but the PI 3B+ I use here uses much less power and is just as fast. -
Getting solar ducks in a row
I’ve not set anything up as yet, still researching.
Originally I had figured on a touch mirror but this seems like it is not possible with what I have and don’t wish to get a IR frame just yet.
So it looks like I’m left with just displaying info and using voice control (Alexa).
I’m a Home Automation (HA) guy from way back, mostly use X10 devices. I’m very new to the PI world but have a couple now controlling my HA setups in different locations using Home Genie and HA-Bridge. I may try one of the other HA softwares that MM has a module for but for now I’m happy. So I have a few questions as one setups is in a off grid location (solar power only)
1:For users that are using HA software are you running it on the same PI as MM?
2: I plan on using MM in server mode as I have a couple of old smartphones and an old 7" Android tablet laying around and figured I could use them in mirrors. Is there an Android client app? If not how are users viewing from a phone ? WEB Browser?
I’ve found a few smart mirror Apps but none that connect to MM maybe I’ll need to create one.
3: Again for the HA users what info are you displaying in your mirror? I realize there isn’t currently a module for Home Genie (at least that I found ) so I may need to create one if I stick with that HA software.I plan on using an acrylic two way mirror which is in transit and I’m thinking I can create two Magic mirrors from this.
Since my first project is going to be for the Solar place I’d like to keep power consumption low so I’d like to run MM and the for mentioned software on a Pi 3B+ which also is doubling as a media streaming device.
I know I’m really pushing a little PI but so far everything works well together.
Love the forum and the users sharing so much helpful info.
Hopefully I can contribute something!
