I am a first time user, I just bought a pi and am trying to set up MagicMirror. I got the base install done and fired up, but the weather doesn’t work. I have also tried to install a few different modules but have been unsuccessful after many many hours/ days of trying to figure it out. I tried to get google photos as my background, tried to install MMM-Aviationwx, Bitcoin ticker and eth ticker and I couldn’t get any of them to work. The first two I tried seem to be outdated, additionally I messed around with weather and tried to switch to Weather.gov as my provider but it didnt work, and now nothing works. I only have a clock. I wish there was more recent youtube tutorials and walk throughs on recent and working modules. If someone could revisit Aviationwx and get it working again that would be awesome. Any advice / help would be great. Currently wishing I didnt spend the money cause I dont think ill ever figure it out / looking into paying someone to set it up for me.

@notacomputerguy the latest release also removes the old current and forecast modules and replaced them w one that takes a new parameter to choose how u want to see the data

so no video of stuff that came out April 1st…

@sdetweil I was kind of hoping this would be a one and done thing. It seems like things become obsolete really quick. I don’t plan on making this a full on hobby, I just wanted a magic mirror that would work for the next few years maintenance free… Maybe this isnt for me.

@notacomputerguy you might get lucky, but I wouldn’t count on it.

we all loved weather modules, but now every provider demands registration and money for things we used to get for free…
and they kill the old apis, sometimes w no notice.

                apple bought darsky
                ibm bought weather underground

none of those work free anymore

keeping things going for customers is no longer the thing.

modules here were created by someone with a need, and willingness to share their stuff…many authors have moved on since then, and their stuff becomes brittle with all the changes around them…

maintenance was one thing, constant rev rewrites are a killer.

@notacomputerguy I would look for the lastest weather module that still uses an api key and try that. :) Even the one I wrote is obsolete… as many providers as there were they are no more so that, as Sams says, breaks things.

The ONLY reason I have free weather api is because I have a weather station so 2 services provide me with keys as long as I provide them with data…

The state of how things are… ugh… it’s weather for God’s sake … but data is $$ to companies… the little guy be damned.

If that’s what’s holding you up skip the weather for now and start with stock modules and build up :) We’re here to help… it doesn’t have to be a full time job!

@cowboysdude i picked on weather as an example of changing times, not specifically what the OP was struggling with

@notacomputerguy I use weather.gov for both current and forecast per module @sdetweil mentions.
I wrote a marginal explainer over a year ago about how to use weather.gov as provider.
You have to do some pre-work on some pages in National Weather Service website to copy over to the config file weather module section.
I didn’t start messing the MM’s too far back and it is one of those type projects that you have an ah-ha lightbulb go off in your head where you feel like you’ve been fighting with MM and then it all comes together as a unified whole.
Hard part is persevering through and not quitting.
