I’m quite sure there’s an answer, but I don’t speak Unix very well.
Another thought- half the fun of a magic mirror is making it! Why not get a good backup of the finished product, and let the kid hack away at it? If it gets mangled too bad, email him your backup files, with a note “you broke it, you fix it”? :)

One problem I see there is this:
If you lock down folder access rights, your scripts might fail too and it will be a hassle to get this right. I second “FlatPepsi” … make a backup and let them play -

I never played around with it. Maybe you could add a new user, change the password for user pi and remove write access for standard users for custom.css and config.js ?
