You could probably use remotecontrol and mpg123 (that runs in the background).
Look at how gismoz voice radio and my touchplayer works. (Running .sh scripts to starr mpg123)

@johnnyboy mpg123 is a linux mp3player that you run from the terminal, it’s a program not a module.

Like you I have tried many mp3 (iPod, iPod video, scan disk, sansa etc) BUT I always go back to the ipod for the simplicity. Other mp3’s don’t cater to large volumes of video & music like ipod do not do they allow you the freedom of arranging your music library. Other players only allow play tracks by file size or alphabetical order and i don’t like that. If you need decent storage you perhaps need to go back to the iPod as they have 30gb, 80gb and even a whopping 160gb range. I also hear the zune is quite good but I opted for iPod video because I had the same issues as you. Bottom line, there a lots of nice mp3 players out there but iPod is certainly streets ahead if you need big storage. Hope this helps
