My attempt at building the #smartmirror
-
Hi guys
Just wanted to share what I’ve been able to accomplish with the various modules.
I have to say that I’m pretty happy with the end product.
Making it work was fairly easy; building the frame for it was a much more involved process, but all worthwhile in the end.
Here are the modules I’ve downloaded and currently use.
- PIR Sensor by Paviro
- Bitcoin feed
- Trello card (bottom right)
- Twitter topics trending for the area
- Google time to work (not displayed at the moment - only turns on during certain times)
- Gmail calendar events
- Weather info
I used an old VGA screen with the active HDMI converter, and it works great with the PIR sensor as it shuts off if there is no feed.
I bought a piece of glass on a local classified for 25$ CAD, and some reflective film (this was actually more difficult than I originally anticipated - I took three tries and still am not 100% satisfied)
Feel free to comment!

let’s try this again
I see it now! Looks great! That’s film over glass?
-
@Mykle1 , That’s correct.
The product Ive used is called
Gila - Mirrored Privacy Window Film
Found at a local Canadian hardware store.It took me three applications to get it to a level where I was satisfied, with a lot of patience, soapy water, and a credit card, pushing the air bubbles out.
The local Mirror and glass shops were quoting me 300$CAD + for a glass the size I wanted, so decided it was much cheaper to get just plain glass and this privacy film.

Well, based on the picture you posted, it looks as good as any other mirror I’ve seen here. Well done!

@Mykle1 Thanks man I really appreciate the comment :)

Hi! Can’t see the image

-
@pepemujica
Let me know if you can see it now -
@FreddyH Yes! now I can see it. Nice Job!
Do you have any other photo of the frame making process? -
@pepemujica
Negative; I actually got too excited building it.
I should have documented it.What I can do is show you the internals after.
I used a lot of wood glue and it seems to hold it really well. -
@FreddyH That would be great!!
-
just wondering if you applied the Gila film on the outside of the glass…or on the inside against the monitor?
-
@cyberphox
I put it on the inside of the glass; I didn’t want to have it exposed, and the glass would protect it. -
@FreddyH thanks for the input! i’m off to work on my much larger build project now! lol

-
@FreddyH Thanks!
Kind regards -
