Unfortunately, I think your only options are to either 1) replace the glass with a type that doesn’t transmit as much light through it (lower % rating) or 2) replace the monitor with a better quality one.

@bhepler Thanks for the reply. That’s right, I’ll have to change the monitor. Can you give me some specifications to keep in mind when buying the monitor?

LP156WH2 insists 200nits as brightness, but usual LED panels also have 200~250nits. You need to choice higher contrast than LP156WH2(1:400).
Of course, There could be nicer panels - By example, Apple - 500nits, 1:1350 Lenovo X1 Extreme(1G) UHD - 500 nits, 1:1414. You can compare those values as reference which panel you will buy.
WARNING RPI can only handle up to FHD(1920*1080). So above panels mentioned are useless for RPI
Anyway the absolute answer will be OLED panel, it could give a real Black. Unfortunately that is still too expensive for MM.

@maiky09 I have found that displays made with PLS technology emit better “dark” color as compared to displays made based on the IPS (and TFT) technology. Think about it.

                  • PLS and IPS are almost same… SAMSUNG call their IPS as PLS rather than LG call theirs IPS. Due to patent, SAMSUNG cannot use the word IPS. both two are slightly different but almost same.

                  • If you want to get more high contrast ratio, consider VA panel. There be various - MVA, PVA/S-PVA, A-MVA/A-MVA+ but almost same too. (AH-VA is some kind of IPS. Don’t be confused.)

                    • The cons of VA panel - late response speed. afterimage would happen. So it rarely be adopted as screen of notebook.(and duralibility issue)
Anyway, usually we don’t use MM as movie player, so it might not be the issue.
                    • The pros of VA panel - Cheap, low light leak, darker black, higher contrast (than IPS)
                    • contrast ratio of VA is usually 1:3000 ~ 1:5000 while IPS usually be 1:1000.
                  • There is another option TN panel. High latency is good point but somehow useless for MM. color is not correct by angle.

But remember; the higher(expensive) of type A is better than the lower(cheap) of type B always.

@Sean said in LED display shines through:

                    VA

                    sorry for misunderstanding.
I kept in mind and thought about VA but typed PLS.
Of course the diff in IPS and VA is visible especially in dark color, due to the higher contrast in the last one.
                    You are right.
Late response speed is not an issues for MM projects I think.

@Sean Thank you very much for that info. I need a monitor between 17 to 19 inches. I’ll see if I can find something.

@Sean Can you please tell me if this monitor is going to work for me? Please look at the specs. Thank you.
