I did a search on google and ifixit to see if I could get some guidance on getting the case off of my monitor and ran across this: Monitor Disassembly (http://h22235.www2.hp.com/hpinfo/globalcitizenship/environment/productdata/disassemblymonitors.html) for my HP monitor.
Other manufacturers may have a similar resource…
@sdetweil I decided to throw caution to the wind and use the native card copier. Good news… The copy was successful and the mirror runs great. I did use the exact same uSD card (both a 128GB SanDisk I got from SamsClub).
I had the same question when I started work on my ‘mirror’ earlier this summer. I had purchased a HP monitor and found a link for 3rd party recyclers to properly disassemble and recycle the various monitor parts.
I used the same search term (except Dell not HP) and found this:

I finally quit procrastinating and read the config.js instructions, coupled with your comments above… and a few other posts here about the same subject
Voila! MM2 runs natively on my Pi4 and in Chrome on my MacMini!
Now the next time the screen goes black with the cursor visible we’ll be able to see if MM is still running.

I cannot sing the praises of @sdetweil’s (install and) update scripts loud enough. it’s just copy, paste, enter, and restart. Thanks Sam.
@macg I’ve got a version of Option 1. I used a 3-port extension cord and used a child safety cover as a ‘mount’ for the cord. Then there are two outlets on one side - one for the monitor PS and one for the Pi4 PS (which is an Anker 5V/3A wall wart type).
