    • RE: Magic Mirror on Windows 8.1 tablet?

I got the tablet for 2days to verify MM works… And it does… but i am still stuck with config and modules…

@roxx - This probably will not work. The touchscreen will be unlikely to register any touches through the mirror surface.

You can still use it as a source for a Magic Mirror, but you will be losing the touch interface unless you rig up an additional system. That said, most mirrors do not have touch capability and they’re still a lot of fun.

Hi bhepler… what do you mean by rig an additional system, i didn’t understand what you mean… I really want my MM to be touchscreen…

my tablet has a thin layer of glass on the screen, about 1mm thick… here in india mostly everyone gets this tempered glass for their mobiles & tablets, it keeps the display/screen safe, an additional protection if the device falls… the touch does work still after the layer of this glass, i guess could i use 2mm 2way acrylic or glass or film?? This tempered glass is easy to stick and remove… . what do you think??

      @roxx

I tried to install MM2 on an older Windows Surface which was also Windows 8.1. But the OS would not let me install it as per the @ Mykle1’s walkthrough.

If by some chance you do figure it out, I would be very interested in how you did it.

@justjim1220 … yep, i installed MM on my tablet as per the @ Mykle1s walkthrough.

While i typed npm install in terminal, i tried installing npm install, but it gave an error… without doing anything further, i searched the net and then installed node & npm together from https://www.npmjs.com/get-npm
Then MagicMirror worked… also check the version of node and npm as it says on that webpage…

now i am working with config file and modules… another problem i came across is that fonts and everything looks big on my 8 inch tablet… clock weather and news, it all touches eachother… i need to make it smaller… theres no space between the modules… it happened before, reinstalled windows & everything and its fine but i guess adding modules will again create this problem…

Yet another problem is the screen goes off after few minutes and comes up with windows user screen… need to disable it somehow…

Moreover, once MM is started by npm start, i cant access anything, i have to bring up the charms bar, search for task manager and kill electron app…

Try it, hope you could too install MM on your windows… And ya, the screen rotates as i rotate the tablet… i mean MM rotates, the orientation… I don’t need to add extra lines in config file for portrait or landscape as i read somewhere on the forum…

      Thanks…

    • RE: Window foil / plastic film for MagicMirror?

@mdhenriksen … thanks bro, this is helpful to me. this could be cheap but for me its $29+shipping to india, but glass and acrylic here seems even more costly… i have to show the videos to the glass makers and other sellers to make them understand what this 2way mirror is and does… Finally i am thinking to order this from amazon and try it… currently i am working to setup MM on my 8" touchscreen windows tablet and my 50" TV 😃 and ya your pictures are really great… Thanks again.

    • RE: Introduce yourself!

Hi all, i am Roxx aka Nelson, aged 26 from Ahmedabad, india. I came to know about magic mirror from YouTube. Its so exciting to have one so i started building one for myself a week ago…

I haven’t learned any programming or anything complicated, i am just 10 grade pass, havent studied further… i am very much interested in computers, hardware & software, robotics, motorcycles, exploring… all that i know, i have learnt from internet and by practically breaking, disassembling, re-assembling gadgets, pc, tv, ac, home appliances, etc… i always want to open it, study how it works, how could i make it better and close it!! … i make simple stuff at home, diy, modify PC’s & Motorcycles, handyman job, etc.

Previously, i had bought arduino to make a clock but before i could make anything i lost it and dont remember where i kept it…

Now i am working to make touchscreen magic mirror since 1st jan 2019, i ordered raspberry 3b+, hdmi cable, sd card, power adaptor,… i got these minimum components and started… I have a 50inch tv at home so for now i am trying to get MM fully functional, then i will buy touchscreen and two way mirror and build Touchscreen Magic Mirror…

I collected all my old pc & laptop hardware to use for MM like ac-dc adaptors, wires, cooling fans, led’s, switches, etc. i wish to setup multiple cooling fans for the Rpi and the wooden frame, etc…

currently, i am having problems with modules in MM, hardest part for me is the programming language, editing the config file, modules, etc…

After coming to this website i noticed, its raspberry and not rasberry!

      Thanks!

    • RE: Cooling solution for LCD monitor?

Hi all… I am building magic mirror and i am using cooling fans from computer cpu to circulate air, keep it cool… Powered it with a 12v adaptor, another 5v fan powered by mobile phone charger, etc… So i have multiple ad/dc Power adaptors, for Rpi, fan, another fan etc… Search amazon for different types of fans… Also the heatsink from computer is useful… Or get something like a net made of aluminium…

    • Backup Magic Mirror..?

      hello friends…
i am just wondering, is there a way to backup all modules, custom files, i mean all the changes we make & new files we add on Rpi just after a fresh install of Magic Mirror…? … like a module? or a command? to backup to google drive or so? i mean like it happens on whatsapp…!!

we could copy the files from memory card but what about files on Rpi…?

if something goes wrong, we could install fresh new Magic Mirror, then download backup, place it on Rpi & memory card… and its good to run again…!!!
