Use PS3 eye without any problem, in a mini PC, clean and clear sound.
I use it now with MM (snowboy) and Kalliope independently. It is conectdo by USB and the response is immediate. In Pi I have not tried it yet, it will be next week. And the fundamental reason, apart from the quality of micro and camera, were those € 6 ($ 7.3) that cost me.
I had a mic connected by 3.5 but it produced a horrible noise. As I did not want to spend a lot of money, and with 2 PS3 eye I could also do 3D stereo camera tests.

I have tried several voice control modules and none completely convinces me.
I am also testing in Linux with a project that could be very interesting if it could be adapted to Magic Mirror. It is fast and efficient, and with Wit.ai (STTS) and pico (TTS) there are no time limits, with an efficiency of 100% in accuracy.

Raspberry pi is fine to mount a prototype, but with MM and Kalliope shows freezing moments …
On the laptop: everything is easy and the answer is immediate.
My next MM with Kalliope (voice) will be in a mini PC. More expensive, yes, but it compensates the normal fluency that these app requires
