MMM-RAIN-MAP (new: version 2.x)
-
@Fozi We’ve a MM setup with 10 pages on it (its more a Family panel than a mirror; so useful for us to keep activities, list and routines and important info for a daily basis)
Anyway the modules that matches yours:
default modules:
newsfeed, alert, updatenotification --> config disabled: trueThird Party modules:
MMM-AlexaControl, MMM-Pages & MMM-page-indicator, MMM-RemoteControl, MMM-GroveGestures, MMM-Tools,Im pretty sure the rpi freezes due to RAIN-MAP animation itself and not because of any module interaction but am not 100% sure.
I’ve updated the module but nothing changes and mirror freezes if I show the RAIN-MAP (got it hidden on start and call it by alexaControl whenever I wanna show it).
If I disabled the module, never freezes (have it on for hours with no problems --> we usually shutdown the rpi when going to bed…If I enabled the module and make it visible on the mirror it freezes at some point (maybe minutes, maybe hours…but it freezes indeed). If I start the mirror (remember default RAIN-MAP not visible) and never show the RAIN-MAP never freezes. If I disable the module (disabled: true) in config cpu usage & temperature on the pi are fine but If I enable it goes up to 40-70% at some stages and temperature goes over 70ºC sometimes…(not good)
I increase value of animationSpeed on module config must say improves rpi performance (I’ve set it @800 and its fine for a longer period and maybe if we’re lucky the pi does not freeze). Could be the zoom in/out feature on module itself…don’t know as its hard to catch a useful log to look at. No error at all on pm2 logs.
Here my newbie contribution; hope we can found something as module looks nice on the Mirror!
I will keep an eye on this topic and, indeed, post it here if find something that helps…
Cheers! -
Also must to say that Ive a raspbian virtual machine on my vmware workstation where I do all my tests with module on it and never freezes; actually Ive got the beauties “MMM-ISS-Live” & “MMM-Earth-Live” that my raspi could not handle and works flawlessly on the VM…
BTW its a pi3B (not the B+) --> so maybe time to upgrade to Asus Tinker Board or pi 4 4GB… -
@rubenix or pi 4 8GB. :) i have a lot of modules switching with the module mm pages and i have no problem with rain map (power on during 24h/24)
-
@chassain-0 i have a rasp pi4 4GB
-
@chassain-0 yeah something more powerful indeed; the most the better.
anyway have no problem at all with any of my pages but when I switch to RAIN-MAP page (by alexa, gesture or automatically on rotation) i see the cpu usage when It shows on the mirror…
hardware upgrade coming soon… -

I think about pre-rendering the map animation once as gif image in the backend using phantom instead of live rendering on the frontend. I’ll test that when time allows…
-
@Jalibu sounds nice!
-
@rubenix thank you so much for your thorough and comprehensive analysis and feedback!
I will now disable the above mentioned 5 3rd party modules nd enablle them one by and check if they’d interfere with MMM-RAIN-MAP. I’ll keep you all posted! -
-
@rubenix sorry, you’re right…my mistake. I just restarted MM and got an update notification for MMM-RAIN-MAP. I’ll pull that and test right away with the new version.
-
@Fozi ok thanks, did not check the mirror today and dont know if i can pull the update; let me tuned mate!
-
I have a alpha version for a backend-generated (pre-rendered) map.
Are there any volunteers who would like to test it? (Please only people who can withstand high frustration :-D ) -
@Jalibu I can test it out on a virtual machine running raspbian for you if that helps :winking_face:
-
@Jalibu i can again
-
@rubenix I’ve disabled yesterday all 6 modules, but unfortunatelly the situation didn’t improve. The memory consumption was still increasing over the time and within 1-2 hrs. the MM froze. I guess I have to do the brute force method and disable all modules and enable them one by one.
-
The serverside prerendering works in theory. The recording is just 2-4 Megabytes and the playback on the frontend consumes nearly no additional computing resources.
The little problem is that prerendering is kind of ultra heavy :-D
My Raspi 3 takes more than a minute for that (with only a few additional modules running) and takes >60MB memory for that.
For those of you having problems due to limited resources with live rendering, the prerendering won’t be the answer I guess :-/ -
I FOUND THE “CULPRIT”!!
Yesterday I tinkered around with a module I tried some time ago (MMM-TextClock) and deactivate MMM-google-routes, as I knew the didn’t play well together. In that context I enabled MMM-RAIN-MAP again, just to see if that would have any effect if MMM-google-routes was disabled.
And Bingo!
Since yesterday evening I had no crash or freeze on my MM. Also the memory consumption appears normal and the processor load is between 5%-20% on average (RPi 3b+)I’ll keep MMM-google-routes disabled for now, as I gives me no real added value at the moment.
And to be clear, it is is a beautiful module and I love it, but I have no current use case for it. I ran it from the very beginning of my MM build without any issues and it is an eye catcher, too. But in favour of MMM-TextClock and MMM-RAIN-MAP we’ll have a pause ;-)Thanks to all of you and @Jalibu for helping me!

Hi @jalibu,
I really like this module, but I fear that the memory issue still persists.
Just cloned the repo, the module runs fine for some minutes or up to one hour, then the Raspi freezes. I am running on a 1GB 3B+ with 4 pages.
Anything you can do about it? -
@requiemmg since I updated the pi to a Pi 4 4GB have no issues at all…came from a pi3 1GB too
