Last night, I was attempting to install Plex Media Server on my Pi that runs my magic mirror. Followed some instructions and the last step was to reboot. I did, and poof, the SD card was corrupted. Pi wouldn’t boot, just kept erroring out. The moral of the story is, back up your Raspberry Pi. I didn’t and am fully regretting it this morning…Learn from my mistake.

@Advokaten My Pi is in a pretty closed off area, I have 3 small aluminum heatsinks attached plus a small fan. The pi itself never gets above 50c

@cowboysdude I would be happy with that! Still going up on the mirror as soon as I get home!

I updated and annotated the css file so you can shape and color the module just about any way you want to with a simple copy and paste into your custom.css file.

Honestly, I was going to mess with the css this time around, but the default module setup, looks fantastic and works perfectly for my purpose. Seriously, this is such a fun module.

My name is Hart and I am 26 from California! I work in software support and am teaching myself some of the development and code aspects of things. I also run a small blog called The Gentlemen’s Society.

I started in the Home Automation world a few years ago when I wanted to make things easier for my wife and have been obsessed since then. I have been wanting a Raspberry Pi, but never pulled the trigger, until I found the MM project! It finally gave me the reason to buy one and now I want more. Got my first “mirror” up and running, which I am using as a dashboard on my TV.

Can’t wait to meet all of you and look forward to the awesome things to come! This is a great community!

I wanted to add a fan from the very beginning although all searches say that the Pi can run without problems up to 80°C or more. That “seemed” hot to me. My Pi was running at 60°C, which is well under the maximum that I discovered. So, I took it upon myself to add a 12v fan (I have spare parts lying around) and connected it to a 5V pin and a GRD pin on the GPIO header. I’ve been running the mirror more than a month without a hitch and my CPU temp is nearly 20°C cooler. Fans are cheap. If you can salvage one, even better. The result is pretty dramatic. Have a look.

I started with a fan and 3 heatsinks from the beginning. Mine runs around 45C and gets close to 50C when doing anything intensive.

I would get the basic MM software up and running, then configure it to what you want to see, then maybe create your own module.

I don’t see why not. If it cools the Pi and it doesn’t harm it in any way then it’s good, I guess. Do you have a picture of that extreme heatsink you mentioned? I’m curious to see it.

Hi Ghaal! Welcome first and foremost!

You need to edit the config.js file. However, we first need to make sure it is created. On your pi, in the GUI, look for an icon that looks like a file folder. If you click on that, it will open a directory of your files. From there, look for the file called Magic Mirror, open that, then look for a file called Config and open that. Inside there, do you see a file that is titled config.js (don’t confuse this with the config.js.sample file)?

Really this is the reason why I went with this platform. The fact that it is so customizable and there is this awesome community built around it, makes it the smart choice for a smart mirror.

@chieftainSupreme Is retropie on the same pi that is running your magic mirror? Is it easy to switch between the two?

Make sure you have the API key and the Location and Location ID in the config.js file.

@hartattack Yes! Looks super awesome, I have Raspbian/RetroPie/Kodi on the same Pi3. I’m a beginner so it took me a while to set it up and configure but yes it’s pretty easy. Check out multibootpi.com and just look through the builds until you find one you like. I recommend using one that has a video walkthrough because there is some nuance.

I’m installing a switch to more easily toggle between the three, but as of now it’s very very simple to switch between them with the help of a keyboard and mouse, or just using the command line.

I even have a tv mount that swivels so I can rotate the screen landscape to play games, and then rotate it back to portrait for the mirror display, really like how it turned out so far

Well, I am doing something different with my first mirror. I need an info-board for my home, so my “Mirror” will be displaying on my main TV. When my wife and I have coffee in the morning, we have a rule of no TV, but we would like a way to see what is on the calendar, weather, stuff like that.

So here is my “mirror”!

Modules Used:
*Clock-Default
*Calendar-Default (with some color added to identify different cals)
*MMM-Stock
*Wuforecast
*MMM-Cocktails (Not officially released but credit to @Mykle1 for his help)
*News Feed-Default (Running Fox News Latest Headlines)
*MMM-SystemTemperature

This Pi is triple booting Pixel, Kodi, and Retropie.

The next step will be to figure out how to make the Pi do the following on a schedule:

1. Wake up at 7:10
2. Load Magic Mirror at 7:15
3. Sleep at 8:00
4. Repeat every day.

The goal is to have my TV turn on at 7:15 with Magic Mirror already booted up, regardless of if I was in Kodi/Retropie last. I have NO clue how to do this, so we will see!

What are you wanting to do with the mirror at events? I can’t think of a purpose for having one at a wedding?
