@bhepler I am using on my win10 dev machine and unbuntu mini-itx 32" inch mirror so it runs great but yes I’d be interested in the RPI-3 info! :)

Well, this sucks. I tried to enable the GL drivers on my Raspberry Pi 3 and it crashed the Pi. It installed the drivers, asked me to reboot and then the Pi won’t come back up. I’m going to have to reflash the card and start over.

It’s going to be a long night. If you’re going to try the GL drivers, back up your config.js at the very least. Better yet, image your SD card just in case.

I had the same black screen issue on my pi3. I reflashed my card twice before realizing I could have disabled opengl by editing the boot config.txt file. This might save someone else some time. So if you enable opengl and get the black screen issue remember to edit you config file to fix the issue.

@d3r This.
I had the same issue on a Pi 2. Starting in safe mode (repeatedly mashing the Shift key on boot) got me up. Editing the boot config.txt file and commenting out the lines that get added when you enable the Open GL driver fixed things.

as anybody know why we have this issue ? I m reading that can be cause of the power supply ?

@BlackTalon got it running to on the rpi3, but it is flickering and sometimes blackscreen. Rpi3 is to weak i think.

@tidus5 The OpenGL drivers are experimental. I think we’re pushing the Pi - even the RPi3 - to its absolute limit with this type of rendering. A stable power supply isn’t the issue. It’s an issue of raw computing power.

This module is amazing! Some thoughts about this:

I’m sure many overlook this topic because it is not classified into one of the subcategories, like all other modules, as one would expect. I believe this piece of art deserves the full attention!
@administrators Is it possible to shift the module to Utilities?
I really would like to use this module for showing real time data from other modules, by using Notifications. E. g. location data from website visitors with MMM-GoogleAnalytics.
@Eunanibus Is it possible to add location data to the globe while it’s already animated?

@SvenSommer I’m glad you like it! There is a separate post for this in Utilities but it hasn’t garnered a huge amount of attention. I’m hesitant because if most users user Pi’s for their mirror, this plugin may provide a heavy burden to it in terms of computational ability.

There is no reason you cannot. I think this would be entirely possible. The module allows you to pass custom locations for pins within the builder (see documentation), so there’s no reason that this information cannot be derived from a custom script.

The module is in a very early state but it’s quite impressive to see it’s working . See for yourself:

Bad side of the story?
I have to get rid of the Raspberry Pi 3 in my MagicMirror. But hey, it was already to long in a “completed” state. :)

@bhepler : You were running this module smoothly on your mirror. What hardware did you use?

@cowboysdude I’m really pleased. Because of yours and others feedback, I’ve revised the front page of this module recommending not to use this module with Pi’s. That said, I’m really glad it’s serving you well - I worked hard on it and that’s exactly what I wanted from it!

Also if you want to submit a video of it in action (wherever that may be!) here, please feel free. I love seeing my module in people’s homes.

Thanks for your contribution here. I’ll review the changes tomorrow (It’s pretty late here) - I believe @bhepler was using a more powerful linux driven system. I’ve had multiple reports from users that their Pi’s aren’t really up to the task, and I’ve updated the title page as such.

I’m going to attempt to create a lite version of this module for Pi users when I get the opportunity. In actuality, I’d like to rebuild the module entirely as there’s a lot of code cleanup I’d like to do. Although Rob S was the original creator of the globe, he assisted me in making heavy changes to the code, and I had to make some additions to make it compatible with the MM framework. Unbelievably, this was actually heavier on processing prior to release. Performance improvements are at the top of my list, as are a few other things.

Either way, I’m really glad your enjoying it, and your creativity in feeding new locations is really encouraging.

@Eunanibus Has there been much progress on this lite version? I know there is about 50,000 lines to work through so I’m not expecting anything soon, just wanting an update if possible because I’m a bit tired of looking at this 3fps globe on the rpi3. Thanks heaps for your work

Hi guys,

Apologies for the late response. Unfortunately I’ve started a new software engineering role and my time has been entirely dominated by an array of distractions.

While I can only suggest that users of this module do not rely on a Pi, I will endeavour to have a more lighweight, Pi-friendly edition of this module (which should lighten the load for other users too) within the next couple of months. Unfortunately, due to load; I can’t make any promises on deadlines for delivery.

I’m having other developers join me in refining the library and tidying up the code quite considerably. Unfortunately, due to the rendering calculations involved, it’s not simply a weekend job. I’m going to do my best to get this completed as soon as possible.

Thanks to all users who have helped others with support in technical issues - You’re truly terrific.
