Hi MagicMirror team, I wanted to share with the community my MagicMirror project featuring a completely custom-built LEGO frame! Hardware Setup: Display: Vertical monitor Computer: Initially Beelink (mini PC), now migrating to Dell OptiPlex D10U System: Ubuntu (Server → Desktop) PIR sensor for automatic screen on/off control via MQTT Implemented Modules: Clock & Calendar (with Italian custom calendar) Weather (Italian weather with hourly and daily forecasts) Compliments (motivational messages) News Feed (Italian news) Automatic screen control via PIR sensor and Node.js Unique Feature: The LEGO frame is completely customizable and modular. It includes: LEGO minifigures on top Colorful decorations on the sides with bricks from various collections Decorative elements (stars, clouds, stickers) Design that perfectly integrates into the home environment Technical Challenges Solved: MQTT integration for PIR control Italian weather modules configuration Optimization for vertical display Power management and automatic screen shutdown The project became not only functional but also a decorative element appreciated by the whole family. The LEGO frame makes the MagicMirror less “techy” and more accessible, especially for children. Hello all. I’m new here, first post. I have been wanting to make a magic mirror, most likely a photobooth to start. However, I quickly became discourage with the high cost of the glass. (say for a 40" tv) Just curious if anyone has considered or attempted to use the off the shelf smart bathroom mirrors (sold on ebay and amazon) and repurpose the two way glass for a magic mirror project? (adding digitizer and large monitor) The price seems cheap ($300 for 47x23" ) and free shipping. I’m assuming the whole area of glass on these units is transparent. It is late, and I needed to bounce the idea off of those who may have been down this road. thanks,

Hi all, I successfully installed my magic mirror a long time ago. Unfortunately - probably due to cleaning - there are some mini scratches now at some spots on the glass surface (although I used a microfiber cloth). They are only visible when using bright backgounds on the laptop LED screen which is attached behind the mirror glass. Do you have any idea - apart from using dark backgrounds - how to solve these issues? Is there any protective foil for example which can be attached to the glass surface, to hide the scratches and to protect the screen? Any experience with scratches? Thanks! Best regards!

@stoffbeuteluwe do you have pics of your mirror? I have a 46" tv too that I’ve been thinking about using. Or even getting a cheap 55" to use in portrait mode also.

@lavolp3 Ciao, I think I will try the one recommended in this tutorial first, it all arrived yesterday, this afternoon I start the tests (… and the swearing …: -) …), my hands are big and my sight it’s not much … I will also try the css code to increase the brightness of the characters. I am attaching some photos on the state of the work, I would say that I am at a good point, too bad for the infrared pir that stole some time, if I knew that there was this tutorial I passed directly to the doppler sensors … That’s okay, art that comes in :-) [image: 1625647959415-img_20210625_183348.jpg] [image: 1625647999029-img_20210625_183457.jpg]

@stalker401 Flush would be perfect but you can go bigger. You would probably notice a slight border effect. My mirror is considerably bigger than the screen and you can really notice the screen through the mirror. Upgrade due…

Hello! I found this mirror: https://www.myspiegel.de/spionspiegel-pg-2102.html (German site) And wanted to ask if it would be okay or if I should look for another one. Thickness: 8mm Light transmission: 11 % Light reflection: 42 % Energy transmission: 13 % Energy reflection: 34 % Energy absorption: 53 % UV transmission: 1 % g-Value: 25 % It seems a bit thick too me, but I’m not sure…

@magicinme which pi? maybe pi4… I have updated the MMM-ImagesPhotos module to do opacity transitions and also blurring around the edges. its not always in sync, and sometimes the blurred background drowns out everything else…(cpu wise) I see the same glitches on my i7-2600k linux desktop electron doesn’t use the gpu i also have a jetson nano (arm64) and odroid (arm7 like pi) , both faster than 4, but still show the glitches. I’ve spent about a year working on different changes to improve the performance, and while I’ve got significant improvement blur kills it (but I like it!)

@aprilmaccydee Thanks for this example! I got the Waveshare Magic Mirror a few days ago and was looking for a solution to dim the backlight. I’m using xscreensaver to blank the screen after 2 minutes and used the ddcutil command to dim the backlight. Here is the script I’m using: #!/bin/sh process() { while read line; do case "$line" in UNBLANK*) sudo ddcutil setvcp 10 100 ;; BLANK*) sudo ddcutil setvcp 10 1 ;; esac done } xscreensaver-command -watch | process I use xscreensaver-command -watch to get the state changes, see https://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/man3.html

@joeronimo, I tried film but it didn’t work. Acceptable quality was with acrylic. Because the acrylic is quite thin and the reflected image was “in waves” I glued it on a thin glass and the reflection was much better. The next step was the mirror glass. Of course, the most successful mirror. It doesn’t make sense to spend money for components, frame and monitor but with film. The result will be unsatisfactory.

@madscientist said in Powering my monitor: @flavito five nights at freddy’s You posted the model type of the LCD panel. So I assume you don’t have a complete monitor but just the naked panel. Hence your question about connecting it to the pi. What you need is a LCD controller board. I wrote a lot about those in this forum already and I don’t want to repeat myself all the time. So have a look here and here. Maybe use the forum search. You should find all the information you need. What I can tell you is that your panel is 21.5 inch, FullHD (1920x1080) and it has a 30-pin 2-Channel, 8-bit interface. You’ll find solutions as cheap as 3-4€ with a bit of hands-on work, 10€ for plug’n’play but a relay is needed if you want to use a PIR-sensor, or 30€ for a board with the needed firmware pre-installed. They all have pros (e.g. price) and cons (custom wiring). Read a bit and if you have further questions you just ask again. Usually I look at the forum daily or at least every two days. Disclaimer: I am with no means an expert here. I just went through the same research when I build my mirror. i got it, thank you for the explanation.

If you just care about turning the TV on and off you could use a relay that triggers the power button of the TV. @cruunnerr made a guide for PIR and relay setup.

Hello @nicolkoekoek, I just finished the software part of my first mirror and ordered this glass from Switzerland a few days ago: https://www.brigla-shop.de/mm-genau/mirropane-chrome-spy-4-mm/smart-mirror-spiegel-288 30€ for a 32x51cm mirror and 21€ for the delivery… This link was useful to compare and choose between the 4 different “Spionsspiegeln”: https://glancr.de/smart-mirror-selbst-bauen/test-spionspiegel-fuer-smart-mirrors/ Kind regards, M
