@toxeek Just to let you know, I am not part of the core MagicMirror team and my answer is based on my personal interpretation of the situation.

I wish you every success! 🚀 I would find it interesting if you could tell us about your project later.

@seedhe - The module framework that @MichMich created is where the technique of hosting the mirror on a Pi really shines. While the Magic Mirror is more-or-less a customizable web page, the ability for the modules to call background processes adds a level of utility.

For example, I can put a static web page up on an Amazon cloud IP and just hit that from my mirror. It will display static data and maybe some things from various APIs, if I code it cleverly enough. But that’s about it.

With the OS working behind the scenes, I can display anything behind my firewall (IP cameras, weather stations, temperature sensors, PIR sensors, etc.). I can also plug in a camera and/or microphone and use the data from those devices in my modules.

It also allows you to scale up if you need to. A Raspi is pretty slick for its size and cost. But if you put something like a NUC behind it, you can use that processing power for some really cool features. Voice recognition, facial recognition, complex animations, etc.

@mitchawl - My understanding is that the plug in the Alexa devices is output only. But I haven’t actually investigated. I could be wrong. Good luck!

@novajones001 - You’re going to have to provide a lot more detail.

It that IP address the IP address of your mirror?
Are you trying to view the content or configure the mirror?

If you’re trying to view the content, then open your web browser and enter http://192.168.1.4:8080 in the address bar.

If you’re trying to configure your mirror, then you need to SSH into that IP address with an SSH client. If you’re using Ubuntu, Debian or other flavor of Unix, you can just type ssh pi@172.168.1.4 at the command prompt. It will ask you for a password, which by default is raspberry.

If you’re using Windows 10, you have to open PowerShell and then type that command. (Did everyone know that PowerShell has SSH capability? I did not.) You’ll still have to enter the password.

Let us know how it goes.

  • Help new users with config syntax errors, proposal

we see a LOT of new users having trouble with unintended syntax errors in config.js.
they don’t know, and MM is running happily without their changes…

so, I want to propose adding the call to tests/configs/check_config.js as part of the error handling…

this was easy, except… MM keeps running with the default config… which it shouldn’t…

I’ve tried all kind of things… process.exit(0); is quick death… except the output of the tests/configs/check_config.js isn’t flushed, so the messages don’t show up…

they took out process.stdout.flush() a long time ago…

none of the workarounds appear to work…

    anyone got any ideas?

    thanks…

Modified my MMM-EasyBack module for MagicMirror. Now you can choose between a static image background and an mp4 file. This is just an example but it is kinda funny, or stupid, depending on your sense of humor, or lack thereof. :-)

Learned a few things during the upgrade. The #id selector for css is fantastic, proving you can teach an old dog new tricks.

I made it work, surprisingly. @cowboysdude made it better.

I was wondering if it could be controlled by the raspberry pi itself, when you set up the MagicMirror2, you run through the audio settings for the mic and sound out put…

Is there any way to control volume from here??

Unfortunately, the Twitter integration module isn’t working these days. That would be an interesting module to present in a store. @mdhenriksen’s idea of a photo gallery of products is pretty slick.

Perhaps a news feed of fashion news.

@richland007 - It certainly is possible. If you’re just passing in a data JSON, then you can use the technique in the Compliments module. The config.js really is just a configuration file, right? The Compliments module has a smattering of code to load the external file as straight JSON and treat that data as an array, IIRC. It basically moves the configuration just for that module to an external file.

You can look at the code in the Compliments module at the main MagicMirror git project. It’s like one function to pull from the file system and a little code to detect that the file name was set in the main config.sys.

Hello, Merry Christmas to you. The Magic Mirror project is not there yet. I first set myself to Home Assistant. The integration of the individual components was not difficult. I have only s.konfig problems. I find nothing like it is to be fidnen in the internet. It must be possible to change the access data of Plex again.
My current plan is to have the home assistant working properly. then the mirror will turn on. the headline is not quite fit because I want to get started piece by piece.
My hardware is a Pi3 via LAN cable on the router. As a router, I use a fritzbox 7590. I installed Home Assistant with the HASS.io image. OR. Flash the map, the rest of the installation takes all alone and can already find a lot of my hardware. Somehow the config just looks different and Home Assistant does not seem to understand what I’m telling him. I’ll play it all over again and try again.

    the software setup?

    https://forum.magicmirror.builders/topic/236/complete-setup-tutorial

There is no tutorial for hardware/build as everyone’s hardware and build techniques are different. However, if you read through the forum topics, or search the forum topics (which I recommend) you will find plenty of ideas.

Take a look at some of the builds that others have made:

Staying away from the implications of installing on your corporate computer…

Try Debian for Linux Subsystem for Windows if you use Windows 10, you can install it from the Windows Store.

    EDIT:
To use the store app you have to enable the WSL subsystem first by following the guide.
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/install-win10
Afterward just install the “Debian GNU/Linux” app from the windows store.
