@JHerndon - Go to Google’s calendar web page and look for your calendar on the left hand side. When you hover over it with your mouse, you’ll see the 3 dots for the menu. Click on the dots and select “Settings and Sharing”.

On the next page, scroll down to “integrate calendar”. Use those URLs (iCal format), no password required.

    • RE: User Friendly Magic Mirror?

There is another possibility. You can purchase a cellular internet USB stick and connect it to the Pi. That way the mirror will always have connectivity and will be ready to go out of the box, so to speak.

At some point, they can get it hooked up to their own WiFi and you can retrieve the cellular connection. If you only charge the USB for a month or so, that will give them a hard deadline to get it connected to their network. Or you can ask them for their WiFi network & passphrase and configure it for them remotely.

Pro tip: If you have an android phone, the next time you’re at their place ask to get on their WiFi. You can extract the network & password and pre-program the mirror for them. You may be able to do this with an iPhone, but I don’t know the steps.

    • RE: User Friendly Magic Mirror?

I think the problem can be broken down into two parts. First, how to get the mirror connected to their WiFi so as to give it connectivity. Second, how to update the mirror configuration. The Remote Control module should allow them to configure the mirror fairly easily, assuming it’s stable.

If you want remote access to their mirror, you can set up a reverse SSH to establish a connection to a server of your choice. I wrote up a tutorial about it.

@Cr4z33 - I can do better than guess. I bought it from www.twowaymirrors.com. They have a rep, @twowaymirrors who is on this forum every so often. They were great and I pretty much only use them at this point.

It’s their 50% transmission model, I think. I’d have to check the receipt.

I was speaking about getting in the mail soon my new microphone that is 3.5mm connector so I can plug it into the raspberry pi’s “headphone” jack (am I wrong it being a 3.5?)

Hrm. Looking at the specs, it’s a 3.5mm four-pole headphone and composite video jack. Four-pole suggests that it’s designed for headsets with a microphone. I’d want to try that to be sure, but… theoretically you could make it work if you have the right adapter. You’ll need something that will bypass the audio channels and connect to the mic contact.

The fact that it is a video out as well is still blowing my mind a bit.

@ArthurOff - It looks like an aspect ratio problem. You may want to try different videos or adjust the size of the module.

    • RE: Any way to fix this?

It looks like the power traces lengthwise along the strip. If you gently pop the monitor out of the frame, you can probably identify where the contacts are supposed to meet up on the side of the monitor.

You may be able to use a very small dab of hot glue in the middle to keep it in place. Or one of the industrial boogers from a credit card offer. Power should follow the trace, so even if it has to go out a half millimeter, it should still conduct. Hold it down when you put it back into the frame, naturally.

It also looks like you only need that one trace from group to group. You could try bridging the pads on the monitor with a scrap piece of wire and see if that gives you power to the last 3rd of the monitor. If it work, solder the wire in and see if that give you your monitor back.

    • RE: Customized frames for MM

You may have luck checking with the local school shop class and/or technical college. People learning how to use the tools can easily make the frame for a monitor. I’m not familiar with Norway’s educational system, but someone has to make furniture and they have to learn somewhere. Find them.

Or maybe even take a video of you turning you head around 180 and then replaying the video alongside your real-time reflection so you can see what the back of your head looks like. Maybe useful for hair styling.

You could try the MMM-Selfieshot module. It gives you a configurable countdown before taking the photo. Start the countdown, turn around, wait for the photo and then turn around again.

    • RE: Monitor Specs

First, I would play with your monitor controls to see about getting more light to transmit through your acrylic. Up the gamma first, the contrast second and then adjust the brightness. The brightness will also affect the black areas of the screen, so don’t just crank it all the way up.

If that doesn’t work for you, then yeah you may wish to investigate a new monitor.

    • RE: Safest method for attaching boards to back of display

I found a bulk pack of wooden popsicle sticks at my local craft store (Michael’s, I think). Something like 500 for a couple of dollars.

I hot glue’d two of them to the back of my Pi and I intend to do the same to the monitor circuit boards later this summer. You can hot glue the other side of the sticks to the monitor or use some other adhesive.

Another possibility: those credit card offers you get in the mail with the fake credit card included? Grab the sticky industrial booger from the back of those cards. It’s pretty strong, easily formed and temperature resistant.

    • RE: Best 17-inch monitor

“Best” is a very subjective term. In my experience, just about any monitor will do as the mirror layer is going to interfere with what normally separates one monitor from another.

To me, the absolute non-negotiable feature is at least one HDMI port and it must face down towards the table in a normal configuration. Other than that… Resolution doesn’t matter so much because I’m just displaying text. Refresh rates don’t matter. Vividness of colors likewise doesn’t matter.

I would look for one with good black levels, as any backlight will show through a little bit when the monitor is on. Other than that… whichever is cheapest for the size I want.

Yeah, that’s a puzzler. Let me do some research and see if I can’t figure out what’s going on. It’s possible that I forgot a step. How embarassing.

    • RE: Start/Stop a pm2 script with Notifications of a module?

@thetobyde - I think you can accomplish this with MMM-NotificationTrigger. That module lets you process notification messages and execute commands in response. It should be pretty easy to execute pm2 commands with it.
