@Steff said in Magic Mirror @ Munich: There is one thing I am unsure about. I have noticed that the controller unit (inverter/ controller) of the monitor has slightly shifted. Maybe I “pressed” the HDMI cable too much and therefore it got dislocated. You can see this in the last picture. Hi all, I encountered the same thing with my Viewsonic. It appears, the Controller units arent’t riveted or bolted (or even glued) to the backpanel. They are just taped together with a silverisch tape. My Monitor has a VESA-Mount at the back, so I thought of bolting the wonitor to the wall with a slim VESA-Mount - which worked for 12hours, then the panel fell off - fortunatetly everything is still working. So I’m thinking - either you have to tape it more thoroughly or use a two-component metal glue for a stable compound. In my case, I’m making a provisionary case with wood also, which holds the Monitor - and I’m not using the VESA-Mount anymore.

The old topic and this one, are around for some time but I’m just finding out. I’m loving the work that you made and would like to now where you bought your product and if you like them? The connect issue is in the past and think @EoF mirror is still running great!! Myself would love a version 2 off my mirror and touch screen is a nice upgrade :)

@planet4 I got some cheap heat sinks for the RPi 3 I’m using just for safety, but my mounting solution avoids boxing the thing in. It’s open around the sides and looks as though it’s floating 4cm from the wall. This effect works fine for where I’m hanging my mirror - no one can see the sides!

Additional picture from behind. Should have taken the picture before installation. It is a little difficult to see though. Somehow it was rotated when I upload the picture. I uploaded a short video on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XBOehkWZ4U [image: 1484454088756-20170112_211345a-resized.jpg]

Here is my 2 cents. Everything you spec’d will work fine. As for the monitor, just about anything will work. There really isn’t a “best” monitor. What do you want to display and where do you want to display it? Quite often builders will get a monitor that is 1/4 the size of the mirror and mount the monitor so they are displayed in the upper left or right of the actual mirror. Is this to be installed as a bathroom mirror? Do you want to stare at the weather report in front of your face while you are trying to shave? As for the best “quality” monitor, anything you buy will work great. Figure out the size you want then look at how the thing is rated by customers and professionals. People here are from all over the world. Many in the U.S. use Craigs List to find monitors. Don’t install pm2 until you are comfortable that all of your modules are working correctly. There is good info that can be had from starting the mirror from a terminal session. Buy the Raspberry Pi, find an old monitor laying around and start playing. The monitor doesn’t even have to be HDMI. You can get an adapter to go from VGA to HDMI . https://www.amazon.com/gp/slredirect/picassoRedirect.html/ref=pa_sp_atf_electronics_sr_pg1_2?ie=UTF8&adId=A1023898KTBOLVX626S3&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FActive-Adapter-Benfei-Converter-Gold-Plated%2Fdp%2FB01KLKQN9U%2Fref%3Dsr_1_2%3Fs%3Delectronics%26ie%3DUTF8%26qid%3D1483978418%26sr%3D1-2-spons%26keywords%3Dhdmi%2Badapter%26psc%3D1&qualifier=1483978418&id=4118648475855561&widgetName=sp_atf You don’t even need a keyboard or mouse. You can VNC into the Pi. In my opinion you are over thinking this. Decide how big you want the mirror and frame to be based on where it will be placed then worry about the monitor size.

Ijon really did an absolutely incredible job :) I basically only gave him the technical parts and a VESA mounting bracket (http://www.pearl.de/a-PX2528-1256.shtml, with additional weight distribution via https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B008KL739C/) plus my idea of how it’s supposed to stack together, and he took it from there; creating CAD drawings, selecting and sourcing the wood after discussing the type with me, always keeping me in the loop while working on it. I really enjoyed the cooperation and can highly recommend him! For reference, this is what it looked like before: [image: 1481540806583-mirror-old-resized.png]

What a fun project! I’m using MagicMirror a little differently - not as a mirror, but as a component of my home automation system. MM runs on a Pi that is connected to my AV receiver/distribution system, and it broadcasts content to five or six different TVs/monitors all around the house. This all started because my home automation setup includes an alarm clock - at the specified time, various lights through the house slowly ramp up from zero, and the bedroom TV (and others) turn on and play streaming music. I was using an Apple TV as the source for that, but when it streams music the video just displays either album artwork or a screensaver. I wondered if I could maybe have the screens display some more useful information - especially a weather forecast - and stumbled on MM. My home automation server software (Indigo Domotics) publishes HTML “control pages” which can display status information for anything it can contact/control. That’s how I get the door lock status and inside temperature (from the thermostat); it displays in MM using iFrame. The automation server runs a radio tuner app called Radium and an Apple AirPlay tool called Airfoil to stream SiriusXM to a client app installed on the Pi that is running MM; the server pulls track/artist info and puts that in a different control page enclosed as an iFrame. [image: 1480526435678-notamirror-resized.png] It’s stretched to the edges because of some overscan issues I haven’t completely worked out yet, but on the house TVs it looks swell. I’ll probably make a few more layout tweaks - had to increase the font size on pretty much everything since it’s usually viewed from a distance.
