It looks like there are different firmware features. Depending on the hardware. Great thx Samsung. Now I have to find out when this option is available. I’m not really willing to spend 500€ for a picture frame. Then I can rather buy a monitor and have a nice wooden frame built by a carpenter.

  • Alternative for Raspberry Pi and 13.3inch Magic Mirror

Hi, we had a 13.3inch Magic Mirror with a Raspberry Pi 3B. In a student project, the students replaced the Raspberry Pi 3B with a Raspberry Pi 4B. Unfortunately, the students forgot that both devices require different amounts of amps. So our MagicMirror broke after a good half year. Now we are looking for an alternative. What we have are a 24 inch and a 32 inch touchmonitor. One of the two should be it in the end, because we really want to use the mirror as a real mirror in a bathroom. So the monitors would be in place and we have spy mirror films. Which one we take exactly we do not know yet. The transmission should work well both during the day and at night or with the lights on and off. But we are also flexible. Now our students have written a few AI applications that are very practical and good to use. Hence the Raspberry Pi 4B instead of the Raspberry Pi 3B. Among other things, it was about image processing and face recognition. With the camera which you attach above the mirror, we are certainly also more flexible and would not have to resort to the RPi camera. We have already seen that the frame rate goes down decently and the Raspberry Pi is busy when there are more than 3 people in the bathroom and captured by the camera. I think since we have two very expensive monitors, even a Raspberry Pi would be very underpowered and would actually not do the whole thing justice. The consideration here went in the direction of mini PCs. There are some significantly more powerful. One disadvantage we have are certain connection options. Again, the camera doesn’t matter. You can also use USB cameras for image recognition. Hopefully, almost all mini PCs have USB ports. What we would also like to add is an HC-SR04 sensor. This ultrasonic sensor is to detect when a person is in front of the mirror. Only then should the monitor be illuminated. What we don’t want to do without is a voice input and a voice output. On the Raspberry Pi, Waveshare has connected the WM8960 sound card driver. We would need a solution for this as well. The advantage of the Raspberry Pi would be the use of GPIO pins, which allows us to use the HC-SR04 and the WM8960. Perhaps there is also a better way than using the WM8960. I also think that extra speakers might be better than the monitor’s speakers. One possibility would be to connect the Raspberry Pi otherwise via USB to TTL serial to the Mini-PC. Then you could still use the HC-SR04 and the WM8960 and use them via a Raspberry Pi. Presumably the Raspberry Pi would also boot faster than the Mini-PC and the hardware connected there could be used without any problems. Personally, however, a single computer would somehow also be easier to maintain and more maintenance-friendly. There are certainly other little things like USB hubs, LAN splitters or any cabling to consider. An alternative for the Raspberry Pi would be very important for us and it should take into account how we could manage voice inputs, voice outputs and distance measurements with it. If there is something more clever for this project than using the WM8960 , then we will gratefully accept this tip. Thanks in advance!

Hi all, I made some investigations about the temperature of my PI… without any cooling - around 52 degrees Celsius with a heatsink from an old PC stuck with cable ties - around 42 degrees Celsius with heatsink and a fan, also from my old PC - around 30 degrees Celsius [image: 1647076692670-df5ca236-67ca-4e41-bf9b-db34b4db0961-image.png] May be this is interesting for someone who use a PI in a close frame.

@rikko14 said in which monitor to choose ?: which monitor to choose? a PC screen or a TV? Well you want a display screen and confuse which screen I buy Tv or Pc monitor. The choice is yours but I can help you to take a decision. Usually monitors have higher refresh rate, faster response time then TV and low input lag. On the other side TVs have large screen and they are fantastic for watching movies and playing games. TVs are less expansive than monitors.

Hi, I saw your post and I m exactly in the same position. I already bought a 24” touch foil. I tested with a transparent glass and it s working 100%. But when I put above the two way mirror glass…the touch foil doesn t work. Can you please tell me what kind of glass do I have to use? I need to buil an oval magic mirror. Thanks Andrei firi1087@gmail.com

@madscientist io games said in What controller board do i need?: @besiece Your panel uses an eDP interface. You can find universal eDP controller boards with the usual suspects, such as Aliexpress or Ebay. I don’t know how the touch interface is controlled. The datasheet for that panel doesn’t mention touch at all. If it is via a second 4- or 5-pin connector it’s possibly USB. I have not yet dealt with eDP displays. My experience is with LVDS panels only. Thank you so much! It’s very helpful!

Hello EoF, I am trying to build a two way mirror that’ll work with touch screen. Were you able to find any non-metallic mirror films? I have been looking but can’t find any? Would appreciate any guidance. Thanks :)

Hi! I’m building a smart mirror, and got the below specs from a local glass shop. Does anyone know if that glass will be suitable for a smart mirror, or is there anything that could be better? Will this be too dark or too light? Thanks in advance! [image: 1641921062047-screen-shot-2022-01-10-at-1.50.21-pm.png]

Cross post from Reddit sorry. https://www.reddit.com/r/MagicMirror/comments/rw9k0k/convert_touchscreen_from_aio_hp_pc/ Hi, Did a quick search, didn’t find a related post. I have a old HP all in one PC that is also a touchscreen. The screen has no external inputs but was thinking I could somehow directly interface the video and touchscreen with a pie. Is this a viable solution? Appreciate any info links or posts I missed. Love the project! Cracked the case open. Some txt on the back of the panel. Took apart a VN247H monitor from ASUS, and to my surprise the LCD driver was actually thin enough to fit inside the picture frame I got. Nice. However, the 230v circuit board is NOT that thin, because it has a few large capacitors and a large heatsink. I got about 18mm of clearance, so I need to be able to power the monitor within those limits. How do I do that? I was hoping externally powering it would be an option, but I see how that’s a problem, as I guess it takes a lot of voltage to power the backlight. Here is a picture of the 9 pins going into the LCD driver, and here is a picture of the LCD driver. Should I just get a new LCD driver and power supply combo? If so, which one should I pick? The monitor is 1920x1080.
