@sdetweil said in 1 old noob + 1 rPi = I can't believe I did it! (revisited): u two keep bringin back to the top! That’s right. :-) 5 years since I completed my first mirror? Who would have thought? I’ve been away for quite some time. Got plenty of messages in the meantime, stating that my modules weren’t working. Thought I would address some of them after a brand new install of the newest MM running on ubuntu 20.04.03. These are running. Although some with hard coded options may not display all of them (e.g. MMM-EyeCandy). Finding the default animations was very time consuming and a changed url is all it takes to break the module. I welcome anyone that wants to find new ones for the module. https://github.com/mykle1?tab=repositories MMM- EyeCandy EARTH Lunartic EasyBack Numbers TP Spacecraft Climacell-Hourly TMWidget Confucius BMW-CC Launch ISS EventHorizon WeatherOrNot Fortunix Insults PopulationClock TrivialAbyss HeavenlyBodies CoronaVirus Earth-Live MercuryInRetrograde PLOW Searchlight Clockinese NASA EOL ToDoLive EasyPix Jeopardy WillyWeather Earthwinds NPMW

Thought that I would share the MagicMirrors that I built… The first endeavor utilized a 32" LED television that had been given to me by a friend. I removed the plastic cabinetry from the television and then cut an opening in the basement family room wall the exact size of the television (I chose the location at the bottom of the stairs and was fortunate that the back side of the wall wasn’t finished as it was in the mechanical area of the basement). I put the television in the opening and then used oak trim to make a nice frame. Pictures are of the front side and the back side.[image: 1643559398985-img_0950.jpg] [image: 1643559414511-img_0951.jpg] After I built my first MagicMirror, I found that it was really inconvenient to have to go to the basement just to see the important stuff so, I decided to build a second mirror utilizing a second Raspberry Pi. (Truth is I needed a project to keep my hands and mind occupied!) I had an old iPad laying around that wasn’t doing anything so I decided that it would make a nice display.[image: 1643559798889-img_0952.jpg] [image: 1643559815356-img_0953.jpg] For the iPad, I made a small opening in the wall behind the iPad and fished the power cord down into the basement laundry room. I used small pieces of oak (1/2" and 1/4" thick) to hold the iPad on the wall. This MagicMirror is on the wall immediately inside the back door. This one is more convenient for us to see the temperature as we are leaving the house. I did have to remove the overhead flights module on this one because of space limitations. This MagicMirror uses VNC to connect to the Raspberry Pi which is located in the networking closet of our home. Both of the Raspberry Pis backup their respective home folders to a Macintosh on the home network every morning. Every night (around midnight) the Macintosh sends a shutdown command to the Pis and then sends a command to the Sonoff at each Pi to cut the power. The Sonoffs power up in the morning which causes the Pis to power up for the day. Building these have been fun and I hope that these pics inspire others to build.

@cheapdad thx, but it not about me… just the expectations are different than the objectives this is a learning tool, which CAN be used in a lot of different ways… it is NOT intended to be an assembly line kit

@sifuhall Looks great. Any chance you could post the options you’ve used for the calendar module? I’m trying to get the same date/time display as you see here for my question - https://forum.magicmirror.builders/topic/16171/how-to-show-actual-times-for-todays-events

  • Magicmirror with frame - Power consumption with Tibber

I came across Magicmirror in an article about a norwegian power supplyer and decided I should give it a go. Another norwegian fellow had made a module for Tibber (the power supplyer in question) which showed power consumption, price, voltage and much more live on screen. I already had a Raspberry Pi 4 lying around from some other projects I had been working on, so that was my base. Materials and cost: Raspberry Pi 4 - 80 EU (including power supply and case) Display 22" Dell Monitor - Free (Old monitor which i had lying around) Frame - Had to buy wood, which costs a newborn child and the blood of your secondborn these days, aprox. 30EU Glass - Free, found an old window which someone gave away online. Had to buy a glass-cutter, cost about 10EU Sunscreen window film. Usually used on car-windows, but worked flawlessly for this application and really gave it an extra dimension with a “mirror” look - 10EU Paint, glue and screws were leftovers from other projects aswell - Free Total cost: ~130EU included Raspberry Modules Included: newsfeed, alert, updatenotification, clock MMM-Tibber MMM-YrNow MMM-YrThen MMM-CalendarExt2 MMM-Xkcd Process: I installed MMM on Raspberry first. The whole proccess took me a almost a month on and off. I love to go deep and fiddle with code and things I have no clue how to do, can spend hours problem solving small problems who no one else even would think about. My initial though was just to have the MMM-Tibber module, and not much else. But this quickly changed when I took a look at all the modules which were available. I ended up having a calendar, newfeed, weather and the XKCD-comic. The biggest challenge, programming-wise, was getting the MMM-CalendarExt2 to work and I spent probably two weeks trying to figure out how to get everything working. In the end I managed to get everything working the way I wanted, and it now includes work and private calendars for both my girlfriend and me, birthdays and trash collection. The calendar-types are iCloud, Office365 and Google. iCloud was a challenge getting to work, but I got it working by adding a new calendar within my Gmail account and linking that to the private .ics link from iCloud. That seems to be working fine. One thing i couldnt get working was the ability to transform the title of events based on the content of either title or description of the event. I have made another post about that, so if anyone feel the urge to help me out, please have a look. Second challenge, carpentry. I am in no way a carpenter, but I am practical. So after spending way to much time planning, i finally decided to make two frames. The inner frame would hold the display and the outer frame would enclose everything and leave just enough height that it would be square with the glass ontop of the screen. I sadly have no pictures of the making of the frame. The display is glued to the inner frame with a little dot of glue in each corner, and the glass is glued to the outer frame with a thin line around the egde. This way, i can unscrew the inner frame from the outer frame and the display will come of without touching the glass. (At least I hope that will work, I have no intention or desire to test this at this point!) Way forward As you can see from the pictures below, I have left a little square below the display. This is where I am planning to fit a camera for motion detection, so that the display doesnt always have to be on. This has been a really fun project, and I hope I can actually get some use out of this compared to some of the other stupid things I spend my hard earned money on. @jakobud [image: 1636451592211-glass.jpg] The price that i paid just before our 2020 lockdown in March was actually R544-00. That accounts to US$ 36.44 with today’s exchange.
