Hi MagicMirror team, I wanted to share with the community my MagicMirror project featuring a completely custom-built LEGO frame! Hardware Setup: Display: Vertical monitor Computer: Initially Beelink (mini PC), now migrating to Dell OptiPlex D10U System: Ubuntu (Server → Desktop) PIR sensor for automatic screen on/off control via MQTT Implemented Modules: Clock & Calendar (with Italian custom calendar) Weather (Italian weather with hourly and daily forecasts) Compliments (motivational messages) News Feed (Italian news) Automatic screen control via PIR sensor and Node.js Unique Feature: The LEGO frame is completely customizable and modular. It includes: LEGO minifigures on top Colorful decorations on the sides with bricks from various collections Decorative elements (stars, clouds, stickers) Design that perfectly integrates into the home environment Technical Challenges Solved: MQTT integration for PIR control Italian weather modules configuration Optimization for vertical display Power management and automatic screen shutdown The project became not only functional but also a decorative element appreciated by the whole family. The LEGO frame makes the MagicMirror less “techy” and more accessible, especially for children. @pnobrega said in Eeepc instead of raspberry: I went for ubuntu based on 16.0.4 16.04 was the most current when I started so I stayed with it. In fact, I’m still running 16.04 on my dev machine. The most current(stable) would work just as well, I’m sure. They’ve made some UI changes that I wasn’t thrilled about but that is not an issue. Gonna se if I can do everything I want with just the PS eye camera I would suggest staying with the integrated microphone, or an analog microphone if you are going to be using any voice control. Assuming the PS cam is USB, you’d be introducing a bunch of latency that you won’t be happy with. Certainly, use the cam for cam duty.

@TheGeekfather I’m in Calgary and just found it from a local glass shop. I believe they sourced it from Crystal Glass. I got three different quotes, all priced wildly different, so it pays to make a few phone calls. smartmirrors.ca is great if you want an acrylic version.

How should I keep everything attached to the monitor and prevent slipping? Sorry if this is an ignorant question but my hdmi board and controller board don’t have a metal housing to adhere to the monitor and although everything plugs in fine I was wondering what would be the best option for keeping everything from slipping once it’s on the wall, should I make a PLA housing? Use Velcro? Zip ties? Thanks for helping out

Yes this is a real problem with the display and controller. Try to contact a controller seller on eBay (e.g. https://www.ebay.de/usr/csmqshop) and give them your display number. With luck, he could help you.

@Fozi For real time application, yep ; with an acceptable delay, recognition could be done online ^^ An offline example for good performance on RPI : https://medium.com/@aiotalabs/deep-neural-network-on-raspberry-pi-c287e06a3250 Would be happy to test that :D

@MadScientist said in Display not bright enough: Hi there, what you want is a display with high contrast. I think VA panels have the best. I can fully confirm the better contrast on VA panels compared to TN panels.

Why not use the onboard WiFi adapter on the Raspberry Pi3 B ? On the sensor topic . Why not go with a Microwave Sensor. Search posts by @fozzie as he has just installed one and likes it alot! I searched for the thread for you and here it is https://forum.magicmirror.builders/topic/11704/update-replaced-my-pir-sensor-with-a-doppler-microwave-sensor/12

@cyrus-io Unfortunately, that is not going to work for you unless you then apply “2-way” mirror film or reflective coating. The operative word is “2-way”. Standard mirrors won’t work. Frankly, you’d have one hell of a time and still not be satisfied. If cost is an issue then please consider “2-way” acrylic mirror which is far less expensive than 2-way glass. Of course, glass is the best result but acrylic can be acceptable. You get what you pay for. Do a search right here on the forum for “which mirror to use” and you’ll find plenty of discussions about it.

How to rotate a display on Rasp Pi… Unless you’re not using a Rasp Pi https://www.raspberrypi-spy.co.uk/2017/11/how-to-rotate-the-raspberry-pi-display-output/ As for calibration you should check with manufacturer… I am using a 32" TV with an IR frame so it covers 100% and no calibration was needed.

Any screen should work, as long as it’s well against the glass it should be fine. As for the mirror glass, 70% reflective/30% passthrough seems to be the norm for “Smart mirror glass”… it goes by different names and such from manufacturers.
