Hi MagicMirror team, I wanted to share with the community my MagicMirror project featuring a completely custom-built LEGO frame! Hardware Setup: Display: Vertical monitor Computer: Initially Beelink (mini PC), now migrating to Dell OptiPlex D10U System: Ubuntu (Server → Desktop) PIR sensor for automatic screen on/off control via MQTT Implemented Modules: Clock & Calendar (with Italian custom calendar) Weather (Italian weather with hourly and daily forecasts) Compliments (motivational messages) News Feed (Italian news) Automatic screen control via PIR sensor and Node.js Unique Feature: The LEGO frame is completely customizable and modular. It includes: LEGO minifigures on top Colorful decorations on the sides with bricks from various collections Decorative elements (stars, clouds, stickers) Design that perfectly integrates into the home environment Technical Challenges Solved: MQTT integration for PIR control Italian weather modules configuration Optimization for vertical display Power management and automatic screen shutdown The project became not only functional but also a decorative element appreciated by the whole family. The LEGO frame makes the MagicMirror less “techy” and more accessible, especially for children. @ninja said in Powerbook G4 screen with Magicmirror: I’m wondering if it’s clever to use an old screen and add 33$ +xx $ for AC for something that will perhaps not work. Instead of Buying a real ‘used’ screen … Everyone has their own reasons for using an old LCD monitor. Some people like to reuse them so they don’t add to the trash that is choking the planet. Some people like projects. I like both of these reasons. You can certainly find used screens that don’t require any conversion. The choice is yours. Good luck and have fun. :-)

Seems like a good price. I was a bit worried about it being TN panel (they usually have very poor viewing angles), but the website lists it with 170 / 160‎ viewing angle. I think the colors will still be messed up at larger angles, but since MagicMirror is mostly black and white, it doesn’t matter so much. Overall, I haven’t owned a TN panel in years, so I can’t give a certain answer. EDIT: But then again, I don’t live in the USA, so maybe the prices are a bit lower there. 50 € for a used monitor is a quite okay price over here.

I have a few plexiglass plates from an older project, so I think I’ll try it with foil first. These guys offer several different foils and they show the foil’s reflective abilities. https://raamspiegel.nl/product/spiegelfolie-zilver-budget/

Hmm, weird. I figured that if it’s not transmitting, it’s reflecting. Now that I think about it, there’s also absorbing of the light. I suppose it’s not suitable then, thank you very much for the input! :)

I don’t know if you solved this yet, but there is an app for that… it’s called Morning. Panic used to have an amazing app called Status Board but they have discontinued it :( . But if you’re looking for a basic one, use Morning.

Thanks for all the advice and after looking around, I feel that the CEC option is the best one but, unfortunately, is out of my budget. I’ve stumbled across this suggestion which looks like a neat (and cheaper way of getting the same effect. https://forum.magicmirror.builders/topic/2077/pir-sensor-sleep-lcd-monitor What’s everyone’s thoughts on it? If it wouldn’t work then could you instead connect to the remote control IR input and force standby that way?

Hello. Im not very good with english, but i will try to explain. Trying to replace LCD panel, from old TV. I was not able to find exactly the same panel. Found similar one. There is one major mismatch, that might be the problem. It is LVDS interface pin configuration. The code is slightly different. Originally TV came with V260B1-L13, but only found V260B1-L12. So, is there a chance it will work? http://www.panelook.com/modelcompare.php?ids=13120%2C2279

@mizzoudavis I leave the bezel intact. Other area not covered by bezel (outside the monitor), you simply add black/dark tape/paper/paint.

@Mykle1 Yep, I’m an idiot. Wrong time zone. Fixed it, and back to normal. For the record, the weather apps act strange when you’re running an hour behind reality.
