  • Two-way mirror film applied directly to monitor?

I was throwing around a few ideas in my head while applying privacy mirrored film to a few windows in my condo and had the realization that potentially the need for glass in a smart mirror could be circumvented entirely by applying the film directly to the monitor? I realize you’d have to apply the film in the opposite way it was intended, with the clear peel-off film facing outward and essentially only apply the film using the suction created by squeegeeing the water out but does anyone have any knowledge of whether this method works? For my purposes I don’t need a flawless mirror but am concerned that perhaps the static generated by the LCD screen may have an affect on the longevity of the film staying on the screen. Thanks for any help.

Hi I’m trying to build a magic mirror that would have touch capabilities, and I have seen some ir frames with multi touch only support multi touch on windows or mac and woundn’t work with a raspberry pi. I was thinking of getting this frame https://www.peauproductions.com/collections/pq-labs-g5-integration-kit-touch-frames/products/z-pq-g5-2k-ig-32 But I don’t know if it would work. Has anyone had a multi touch frame that worked?

@MWel1977 That guide is a little old. Yes, it will still work as described. However, I’ve left Windows behind where MagicMirror is concerned. If I were writing that guide today I would be urging the use of ubuntu. Continue what you are doing, by all means. If all else fails, consider trying ubuntu.

@BandNerd1002 - Not to worry. First, let’s get your config.js off of your SD card. Using the Windows File Explorer, browse through the boot drive and look for the config.js file. Copy that to your computer. (if it turns out that you can’t find this file, no worries. We’ll recreate it later). If you were able to backup your config.js file, great! If not, no big deal. At this point, I suggest you follow the Complete Setup Tutorial. It will walk you through prepping your SD card and getting your Magic Mirror reinstalled. A couple things to note about the tutorial: It’s Raspian Stretch now. Download the full version with the recommended software. The command to clear out some installed & unnecessary software will fail due to some of the listed software not being included. Try running the command one application at a time and skipping the ones that aren’t found. Once you have your mirror back up and running, you can copy your config.js file back to your Raspberry Pi. Then you just have to re-clone and re-build all of the modules you had downloaded.

When you turned it off before, how did you power down the pi? Did you use the inline power button in the power cable? If so, it’s possible that the card might have been corrupted. If you have a known good backup, I would try flashing that back to the card to see if it boots. I don’t know why the power supply includes a push button switch, as this is a known way to mess things up. It’s best to SSH in and use the command sudo shutdown instead, or wire up a momentary switch to the GPIO that runs a script to execute that command. However the fact that you say that not even the red light comes on leads me to believe there is a larger problem, and the board might indeed be dead. If you have a spare SD card lying around, try flashing NOOBS on it and see if that boots.

@dxfan227 read this topic: https://forum.magicmirror.builders/topic/7035/boosting-usb-mic-or-best-mic-choice/2 depending on your project goals, the USB mic might be a good option, but if the primary use would be voice assistant, then I recommend the mic array.

depends on the touch film of the screen, might work, might not. If you have the the screen directly under the glass (not two way mirror glass btw, metal disrupts the field). it should be strong enough. What Touch foil did you buy? Never seen the lines layed out like that before (usually it’s designed as a straight line grid).

@Sean Sounds like fun Sean. Recently, a user mentioned that he was using an old “Clapper” to turn his monitor on and off. https://forum.magicmirror.builders/topic/10076/power-saving-modes/6 So cool!

Hi, I’ve been busy with this problem for a long time until I found the solution. And it’s called RCWL-0516 Microwave Radar Sensor. Guys, forget PIR sensor, the RCWL-0516 you can completely obstruct in the frame behind the mirror. It works perfectly with paviro / MMM PIR sensor. You get 5 pieces for 8 € on Amazon. I hope I could help you. And forgive me my bad English. Regards

It is all about research. However, I haven’t found an extensive comparison so far. Apart from the link mentioned by @ganget, this link helped me dig deeper in the glass topic. I’m trying to find a glass for my MagicMirror as well. I ordered the sample set from brigla and two 3mm samples with 12% and 20% light transmission from glaströsch. To be frank I don’t find any of the samples satisfying so far. Compared to my bathroom mirror they all seem pretty dark. See for yourself. My favorite so far is the Mirastar 4mm. In real life it even looks a bit darker than on the pics… Mirropane Chrome Spy 4mm Light transmission 8% Light reflexion ? I like glass. I had been using acrylic until @ejay-ibm suggested I give glass a go. I haven’t actually got the reflective film on perfectly (yet, trying again tonight!) but so far glass seems like it is going to produce a nicer finish than acrylic. Thin acrylic just won’t work. It’s too hard to get it perfectly flat so the reflection is distorted. Thick acrylic is better in that respect but it still scratches too easily. Glass is thinner than the thin acrylic. I think glass weighs about the same as the thin acrylic. Glass just seems better in every way except it will cut you. Glass Pros: nicer finish thin light weight no warping cheaper than acrylic doesn’t scratch easily Glass Cons: it will cut you Acrylic Pros: it won’t cut you Acrylic Cons: warps easily (sometimes it’s already warped at the store) scratches easily (sometimes it’s already scratched at the store) more expensive But this is all with me doing it myself. I wouldn’t be surprised if you found a very nice, big, professional-looking piece of acrylic with the film already on it somewhere. But based on my experience glass does come out nicer and lighter.

Really cool idea. I’d just go with an accelerometer sorry just found that with a really quick google search on a German site, but you’ll get what I mean :) https://eckstein-shop.de/GY-346-Accelerometer-3-Achsen-Beschleunigungssensor-ADXL346-fuer-Arduino-Raspberry-Pi?curr=EUR&gclid=CjwKCAjwmq3kBRB_EiwAJkNDpx2x0CsKx1VTSGcU_NeQNqVU1vRg7enu1Nt0FTXsmRLgGDGBaxgYFxoChuMQAvD_BwE

Also based in Denmark like @mdhenriksen and considering going the foil route for a frameless 32" bathroom mirror. What about interglas.dk? Have you tried them? I’m contacting them tomorrow to see what the price is - as the in-site calculator they have says for 70x40cm the mirror is 50€ + shipping

@cubesmi said in Monitor for MagicMirror, 22-26 inch: Hi @roxx Did you get your EW2775ZH? With its contrast, brightness and thickness it seems the best option for me as well at this moment. What is the thickness after removing it from its case? Hi, i have removed the case yesterday… Will post details and pics soon… I need some time…
